Thyroid FNA question

Hi all

I recently had an ultrasound on a lump in the right side of my neck. The scan showed a 3cm thyroid nodule, graded U3, and an appointment was made for a follow-up FNA biopsy.

Thanks to all the posts here I wasn't too worried about the FNA and it was actually fine. However, I only realised afterwards that the biopsy was taken from quite close to the centre of my neck (near Adam's apple area), whereas the bulk of my lump is to the right of centre. I guess I was expecting the needle to go into the main part of the lump? Just wondered if this was typical of other people's experiences.

Thanks

  • Hello bimple

I'm sorry to hear that you're currently waiting on some biopsy results. We know that this can be an anxious time for many people and hopefully, you won't have to wait too long for your results.

The question that you've asked is one that I've seen posted on the forum many times before. It's not uncommon for the biopsy needle to be inserted at an angle or point different from the one that you may have been expecting. Try to remember that the clinician who did the FNA is an expert in this area and is used to doing these regularly.

If you want to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. I'm sure they will be able to offer some information and reassurance.

    Best wishes,
