Health Anxiety - So scared of symptoms. Bowel/Gyno

Bear with me, cos this is a long-ish story and I'm not sure what's relevant and what isn't. I've always had a sensitive stomach which I've always been told is suspected IBS, never been formally diagnosed as never had any of the more worrying side effects, just an upset tummy eating certain foods, or when feeling anxious.

I recently got diagnosed with Psioratic Arthritis (which means my immune system attacks healthy joints), and to treat this was put on Methotrexate. This caused nausea and raised by liver enzymes, so I was taken off of it for some rapid recovery, and switched to injections. The week I was due to begin injections (August) I had agonising pain and was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with kidney stones, and given tamsulosin to help pass it naturally. I had gastric side effects to the tamsulosin (unsettled bowels and heartburn) and was advised by the GP to stop. I passed the kidney stone that weekend and all was well, and I started the injections mid September. I only had a very light menstrual cycle as was on whilst in hospital, decided that was likely due to being unwell. I also missed October's cycle, but not unusual for me, as my cycle has been slightly erratic after multiple miscarriages.

Skip forward a month, I had my flu jab, and the following week a 3rd COVID jab (not booster, just a 3rd one due to being immunocompromised) on the Friday. Saturday morning I felt unwell, slight fever, and vomiting over night. Since then I have had primarily altrnerating diarrhea and constipation, with a couple of normal stools thrown into the mix. This seemed to get worse when taking my MTX injections, so GP thought this was the cause, and advised I discontinue. He also did bloods and a stool sample to check for infection. All was normal on both. At the same time my menstrual cycle started, but much heavier and more painful than previously. This was explained as being because I had both a light, and a missed period, and also a swollen irritated digestive system. I was prescribed pain relief, but this caused constipation and make cramping worse. So on advice of GP I started the progesterone only pill.

I'm now on day 19 of my menstrual cycle, now only spotting but varying for dark brown almost black, to pink and watery. I was advised as no other side effects, no new sexual partners etc that this will settle in the next 2-3 months and was likely caused by a heavier than normal cycle + starting the pill. I can only tolerate very plain food, white rice, white pasta, tuna, salmon, chicken and turkey. Anything else seems to give me severe diarrhea,  but just eating that food almost makes it feel slightly more difficult to go than normal. GP said I could be a bit more adventurous and follow online IBS advice, I tried mashed potato and lean pork sausage air fryed, and passed straight through me and caused cramping.

GP has said I need to wait for everything to settle down, that he doesn't want to give me any medication as my tummy is already sensitive and he doesn't wanna cause symptoms to worsen. He said as bloods are normal, no blood or black stools, no fever, no infections showing in stool sample, no new sexual partners, look a normal skin colour, no rapid sudden weight loss etc - that this all should settle down.

I'm terrified that something more is going on and that I'm just going to be dismissed until it's too late. I'm also petrified to keep pushing because I'm terrified I might need something like and endoscopy or colonscopy, or surgery. I'm a victim of childhood sexual assault, so being laid down and unable to protect myself is a big big phobia. I won't even take gas and air , or drink alcohol because it makes me feel to vulnerable and unsafe. Let alone doing anything in a Covid enviroment without my husband for support.

I'm scared, barely sleeping, barely eating as have to stick to that limited diet, and living with these cramps and bowel issues. Only left the house in the last month to visit the GP.

I know people on here aren't medical experts, but does this match anyone's symptoms, should I be worried, and pushing more?

  • Welcome to the forum ScaredAnxietyGirl although I'm sorry to read what you've been through and why you've joined us.

Hopefully some of our members who have contended with similar symptoms will offer their thoughts and advice to you soon. In the meantime the only thing I can suggest is to follow your doctor's advice and if things haven't improved, then go back and see what happens next. However, if you feel your symptoms won't settle down you could try getting a second opinion from a different doctor.

If you would like to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, you're very welcome to give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I really hope you're able to get to the bottom of this soon ScaredAnxietyGirl.
