Bleeding between periods concerned about cancer

My periods are like clockwork but this month I have had quite a lot of bleeding between my period. Have back and hip pain. Went to see my GP who checked me and straight away sent for an urgent scan. I'm worrying and naturally thinking the worst.

  • Hi. This is a worrying time for you. It's really good that your GP is on the case and has organised a scan. You said you are thinking the worst, which is a really understandable way to think - I had moments of blind panic. Bleeding between periods doesn't necessarily mean cancer, but you've absolutely done the right thing by getting it checked out.

I had spotting between periods and put off going to see my GP for ages, as I just put it down to hormones going a bit mad & the menopause finally on its way. I was wrong- (this is NOT a sign of approaching menopause!!) and it did turn out to be cancer, but it's a funny thing- in a way the fear of the unknown can be worse than the reality, because once you know, then you are given a plan of action to follow. I've just finished treatment and had a clear scan a few weeks ago.

I really hope your scan brings reassuring news, but if it doesn't, the NHS is wonderful.

All the best. Thinking of you xx

  • Thank you so much for replying and sharing your experience.  I'm 43 so pre-menopausal too. I've had spotting before and had laser treatment to remove a polyp however this time

is was like having a mini period within a period.
I hope my appointment comes quick as my mind is racing and I know it can be minimal but the big C word is a scary one.
I have great support from my husband and whatever I need to do or have done we are in it together

  • Hi- that's great to know that you have support. My husband has been my rock, I have to say, throughout all this. I don't know whether your online name refers to children, but we have four too!

Anyway, all the best. Fingers crossed for you. Hopefully you won't need any treatment, but if you ever want to ask any questions about mine, feel free.

  • Yes I have 4 children and I live in Wales.

thank you so much I really appreciate it ️

  • Hi mamof4.

Totally understandable how your feeling .

I'm currently waiting for an appt for the 2 week service.

I had spotting/light bleeding for weeks, didn't go to drs as I have irregular periods & pcos, plus had some irregular bleeding last year which was looked into & all OK. But the bleeding is now like a proper period & has been for the last 4/5 weeks. I've had blood tests, swabs & examination, plus a scan. I had an appt to see a gynecology consultant in December. But spoke to Dr on Friday regarding my scan results & he decided the 2 week pathway was best as my lining is still 13mm even though I'm bleeding.

People on here say the waiting is the worst bit & I think that is true. I just want a date for my appt, I'm nervous about what other tests they will do.

    Hope you hear something soon.

Great to hear you had a clear scan. Must be a big weight lifted for you.

Well done for getting through it all.

    Xx

  • Hi Becky- thanks for your reply- that's really kind of you.

I hope all goes well for you - Glad you are on the two week pathway. I found it comforting to know I was being cared for, even though it was really worrying too xx

  • Hi Bec1987, thanks for sharing. It's a scary time isn't it and being made to wait makes things worse.
have they given you any answers so far?
hopefully there are others on here who have a similar experience to you and can help

big hugs and best wishes to you

  • Hi mamof4.

    Sorry I haven't replied sooner.

How are you doing? Have you had your scan?

With regard to answers they said it could be hormonal or endometrial hyperplasia. They obviously can't rule out anything else & I do keep worrying.

After having to chase, I've got my appointment on Friday. Not sure what to expect.

    Xx

  • I'm doing good thanks, having to take ibuprofen more than I would like, my back, hips and legs are hurting (weird pain feels like a dragging dull ache)

Still waiting on my scan I'm going to chase it up today.

hope you get more solid answers. It's really hard not to worry isn't it.

I'll update when I have my scan x
