HPV and borderline changes.

Hiya,

so I recently had a HPV positive result and borderline changes smear test. I am so scared, I can not think about anything else. I have been having pain inlower right abdomen, back pains, pains in legs and headaches. I did used to suffer with cyst on my ovaries when I was younger so am not sure if it is that.  I have spoke to my doctor and she said I could have PID however I am so worried this is cervical cancer. Im not sure when  My colposcopy is as when I called they said I was on a waiting list. When I had my smear done would it of come back a high risk if that was the case and are these pains something else. My anxiety is through the roof at the moment.

if anyone could shed some light as im so worried It would be much appreciated xxx

  • Hi brownevee

I think it’s natural to be a bit panicked to get an abnormal smear result but it is extremely common. High risk HPV can cause various levels of cell changes, from mild to moderate to severe. Borderline cell changes are the least serious and would not normally be treated as the body can clear the HPV infection by itself. Having these cell changes shouldn’t cause pain, and it definitely doesn’t mean you have cervical cancer. It is much more likely that your pain is associated with another issue like PID as your doctor has suggested.

The only way to know more is to have the colposcopy done where your cervix is closely examined and a solution put on which will identify any areas of abnormal cells. This will confirm the level of cell changes and then a decision would be made on either removing these cells or leaving things as they are with regular monitoring. Your anxiety could well be making your physical symptoms worse, unfortunately, especially headaches and abdominal pain, so try not to worry too much at this stage before you’ve had any sort of diagnosis. xx

  • Hello,

I Know this was posted a few months ago but just wanted an update on how your results went...

I'm having the exact same symptoms and I have just revived the same results as you too. I hope it doesn't sound mean...but I'm so happy I've found your post because I'm going out of my mind.

I have a young daughter and keep having really sad thoughts that I have cancer and I'm going to leave her behind.

Hoping for some reassuring news from your results/ experience.

    xxx
