Worried it's cervical cancer and the wait is long

Hello everyone,

First time poster here and just looking for some support really! I have had dull pelvic pain and cramps ongoing for over a year. At my last smear 18 months ago it said I had abnormal cells but no HPV so nothing to worry about. That was fine, and I carried on as normal. The pelvic cramps always get worse around ovulation and I always have a feeling of fullness in my pelvis, like when I was pregnant!

Fast forward to 4 weeks ago, the pain is continuous and can no longer ignore it. Its in my lower back now which is really uncomfortable. I have a lot of bloating but have always put it down to IBS. Not sure it is that now. Had intercourse 4 weeks ago and bled after. I've had sporadic spotting previously too. And again, since then I've had bleeding in my discharge. I'm exhausted, totally exhausted.

Saw the doctor, she was lovely, did all the swabs to rule out thrush, STDs and an internal examination. She had to stop that as it was very uncomfortable. I've had two abdominal examinations, and my stomach is very painful to touch and press.

They referred me 4 weeks ago for an urgent internal ultrasound. But due to coivd, I think the usual 2 week wait is now more like 4-6.

My pelvic and back pain is worsening by the day and I'm just waiting and waiting. Worried that something sinister is progressing and I can do nothing about it. There's a history of female cancers in my family, maternal grandmother died of breast cancer, one aunt has had breast cancer, other aunt just died of ovarian cancer...so I'm worried.

  • Hi Designerlife

No wonder you’re exhausted if you’ve got constant pain-it’s awful. Abnormal cells are caused by the HPV virus, so even if you tested negative, you would have still had the virus- it goes from active to dormant depending on the strength of your immune system and only tests positive when active. If you didn’t have treatment for the abnormal cells at that point they must have been low grade changes which are not normally treated.

It looks like your doctor has been thorough in her testing, and the scan will give a better look at what is going on. These types of scans are not typically used if cervical cancer is suspected as they don’t tend to show it, so I wouldn’t focus on it being that. Can you call and explain your pain is worsening and see if you can get a cancellation appointment if you’re prepared to go at short notice? While some of the symptoms you describe could be associated with cervical cancer, they could also be something else and if the doctor had suspected cervical cancer you should have been referred to a gynaecologist on the 2 week wait rather than for an ultrasound scan. I hope you can get an appointment soon to get some answers. x

  • Hi Sue

I’m sorry to hear your diagnosis and hope the scan goes as well as it can for you. I was the same-post menopausal bleeding and unfortunately did get a cervical cancer diagnosis, but you’re right-any unexplained bleeding after the menopause needs investigated. Let us know how you get on-this is a really good forum for support. xx

  • Hi Sue

I’ve been here for quite a while-since my diagnosis more than 3 years ago. Hopefully you’ll be able to connect with other ladies who’ve been in the same position as you find yourself now and that will be helpful for you. xx
