Bleeding post menopause

I recently started bleeding but I am post menopause.

I have had a smear and waiting to see Gynaecologist and an ultrasound?

has anyone else experienced this?

  • Yes. I had a very slight bleed a month ago which occurred a year since my last period. I told my doctor and she told me to come in for an internal examination and that she would be referring me for a womb scan regardless. I had the internal the next day ( no infection found and I also had a smear which I've been told was fine ) and the womb scan a week later. The scan was a vaginal ultrasound- it didn't hurt at all. I saw the Gynaecologist straight after and was told that my womb lining was slightly thicker than it should be for a post menopausal woman- 7mm rather than 2-4 mm. Hence I needed to have a biopsy to check for cancer. Which the Gynaecolgist did there and then. I am now ( anxiously) waiting for the results.

She told me that it is possible I'm still in peri menopause hence the thicker lining ( endometrium) so obviously I'm hoping that's it. She also mentioned I had a fibroid and, since looking up uterine fibroids, it seems that could also be a cause of post menopusal bleeding, I had no idea I had any but have now learnt they are extremely common .

I hope you aren't too scared, I am currently soemwhat terrified but am trying to not to think about it too much . Womb cancer is treatable and survival rates are very good providing it's caught before it's spread outside the womb. I was told over 90% of  referrals like mine do not have cancer. And have found out for myself that only about 6% of endometrial biopsies detect cancer ie the rest don't have it.

Best wishes and love to you.

  • Thank you so much for your response.

I am also terrified. I am post menopausal and had a couple of episodes of bleeding. I had an internal and smear yesterday and now have really bad back ache.

I am booked in for untrasound on Wednesday, then apptment with Gynaecologist. So a waiting game.

I hope that everything come back clear for you xx

  • Thank you. I haven't yet had the results of the biopsy. I hope it all goes well for you tomorrow. XX

  • I had my abdominal scan and vaginal scan yesterday and they mentioned fibroids. I hablve had a call this morning to go back in next week for a camera into my womb. Very anxious time at the moment xx

  • Hi, I hope you're ok and no cancer has been detected by the camera.

I didn't receive any results of the biopsy I had a fortnight ago, just a phone call today saying I need to go back for a hysterescopy ie the camera in the womb.

    Best wishes to you xx
