Symptoms of Colon Cancer but no help…

Hi everyone, first time on here as things are getting a little bit scary for me lately. This might be a long one so I apologise in advance. I'm 22, closing in on 23 and my health seems to be rapidly declining. In April of 2019 I was under so much stress that I started to experience what I figured were IBS/IBD symptoms. Painful bowel movements, severe cramping, I would go through hot flushes and cold sweats but then would be completely find after it was over, perhaps a little tired but feeling relatively normal. That was on and off, in fact I went about a year after that before I had any other flares. Then another year passed me by, bringing me to 2021. Things got worse this year, I had one flare at the end of April 2021 that eventually never went away. In September I started to experience anal bleeding.

I called my GP, instead of giving me an appointment with a doctor or a nurse, I was given an appointment with a 'specialist' however she was practically new to everything and she was referred to as Ms, rather than Doctor. She gave me an examination of the rear passage and told me that there wasn't any blood and that I didn't have any haemorrhoids, however I was prescribed supplements to ease haemorrhoids and sent on my way. The supplements did nothing and I only ever started to get haemorrhoids after I finished the course. I started bleeding worse so I went back to the GP. Finally got them to take a stool sample, which was mostly blood, not great but good because they couldn't ignore it. It came back that I had an inflammation somewhere. I was told I was getting a referral, however every time I went for the letter it wasn't ready and then they closed for a week. Two weeks later and I finally got the referral letter. Sorted all my details out and just had to wait for them to call me, which they never did.

Fast forward to just over 2 weeks ago in which I'm going to the toilet 10+ times a day and it's just blood seeping out of me at this point, I don't have much pain just cramps until I've gotten rid of most of the blood. Bare in mind that I don't have to push or exert myself at this point. Every time I go there's no actual bowel movement, just blood and clots of blood. When I have to pass gas it gives me a bit of cramping and sometimes when I'm least expecting it, I just end up with underwear full of blood just by passing gas without pushing. So I went to A&E. nobody can find my referrals on the system, I have a blood test and apparently I have a high number of inflammatory markers in my blood. I get told they're going to send their own referral to a specialist. They make me an appointment two days later for another blood test as they're worried about anaemia. I go back, have a blood test which show that my inflammatory markers are lower, which is good. I have an examination of the back passage, again, no blood. I then get sent for an x-ray. There's a small blockage in my bowel which they presume is constipation and then I wait for an hour for them to tell me that they've spoken to the specialist and he's put my case down as urgent.

Cut to almost 3 weeks later and I've heard nothing and unfortunately, as we all do, I did some Googling and I've got almost all symptoms of colon cancer. And that's how I ended up here, where I do admittedly feel a little better seeing people with similar symptoms have something that isn't cancer. But I'm still so worried and I have no idea what to do or who to chase in order to actually get something done. If I even had a date for a colonoscopy or something I'd feel much better but I don't.

  • Hi it sounds like you are having a really tough time. I can't offer any advice on what it could be but me personally I would be pushing for a colonoscopy that's the only way they can find out what's going on in there. There are a lot of things it could be and until you get that you won't know for sure. I think a lot of NHS trusts need a positive fit test before you can be referred for a colonoscopy, not sure if you've had this test but if not maybe ask for that to be done by your GP. If the results are positive which they should be if your are bleeding the you get referred under a 2 week referral standard policy I believe. I do hope you get sorted soon take care.

  • Gosh that's crap. I would ring your GP and say that you need a referral for an urgent colonoscopy as you have blood in your stool and that means you are entitled to one under the 2 week rule.

Maybe take photos of the toilet bowl after you have been, so you can show them that.

  • Hi there. Sounds like you are having a very hard time...poor you! I am no doctor and I don't want to diagnose you but your symptoms sound much more like either colitis or Chrons than cancer. You really need  to see a specialist because these conditions are no joke and you would need to get this treated ASAP! I used to suffer from mild Colitis but haven't had a flare for over a decade. Its so hard to not freak out at these symptoms. I was convinced I had colon cancer before my diagnosis but it turned out to be ulcerative Colitis. You need to insist on a colonoscopy because if it was this you would need treatment very fast too!

  • Just to say the fact that the doctor is referred to as "Ms" rather than "Dr." isn't a bad sign or an indication that she isn't well-qualified or isn't experienced. It just means she is a surgeon and it's sort of a sign of status, distinguishing her from doctors who do not perform surgery.
