Cervical cancer

Hoping for some advice. Went to the gp today and had a cervix examination because my periods have become shorter in the last few month. She took some swabs and whrn she saw my cervix she mentioned it was quite red and she was referring me to oncologist and should hear from them in the next 10 working days. I know oncologist is cancer, but she did say these things usually end up been cervical ectropian, did mention i will probably have an ultrasound too. Anyone else been through this ?. Heads all over x

  • Hiya. Sorry to hear you having some health worries lately.

GP's see a variety of patients and are not specialists in certain area.

Usually you get referred to a clinic for tests at the hospital- often these issues need to be reviewed relatively quickly (2week rule)

they will ask you general info- medical history etc. They should have swab results by then too which will give more information on what's going on.

Oncologists are specialist that's deal with cancer-but nothing had been tested yet so try not to panic too much. Lots of issues turn out to be totally normal .

Whatever it is I'm just glad you've been checked out -which is always best.

    Keep smiling

    Efffie x

  • Thankyou so much for your reply, its hard not to overthink when the c word is been used. Its second time in less than a month that cancer has been mentioned as had the ovarian cancer blood test not long ago aswell. That all came back normal, so fingers crossed it is the ectropian x

  • Hi Kay

It’s standard to be referred to a specialist to get things checked out, but please don’t immediately assume you have cervical cancer-there are other things this could be, such as cervical ectropion, which are not cancer. I assume the swabs were to test for any possible infection? An ultrasound isn’t typically used to check for cervical cancer so it sounds like you may have this just to get a better look at your pelvis in general. It looks like it won’t take long to be seen to get checked, so all I can say is try not to let your thoughts run away with themselves at this stage while you don’t have any information. x

  • Thankyou for gor reply, yes i know she explained and i have looked into it all etc. I just wondered whT other people's stories were. Trying not to think about it until i know if that makes sense. X
