Colonoscopy prep help needed

Hi

I'm due to go in tomorrow for a colonoscopy to say I'm scared is an understatement, I be gone through every feeling possible just want tomorrow to be here and done.

Ive just started taking the prep and it tastes disgusting does anyone know could you add orange cordial to it to help it go down?

Im only half way through the first lot and struggling to get it down thanks

  • I've just joined a bowel cancer group on FB and tney recommended doing so on there. My husband found it better cold, so we added ice cubes.

  • Great so orange cordial ok thank you. I read somewhere you had to make sure it wasn't made with chilled water so might avoid thrnice cubes the waters quite cool anyway so that not to bad. Thanks for your advice xv

  • Hmm, not sure. Did the job for him though! Good luck x

  • Got my fingers crossed for you for tomorrow!

  • Hi all done and home  relieved to say it looks like it's colitis they took biopsies and have taken me off the cancer referral. To say I am relieved is and understatement. thank.you for your support I do hope.your husband will be ok xx

  • Hi Scaredv,

So happy for you.... you must be so relieved.  Can I just ask about the colonoscopy... how did it go? was it really painful?  would you recommend the pain relief or is it possible to get through it without anything.  I'm booked in for next week and am slightly worried.  I hate the thought of been sedated or drugged up

  • Hi

Relieved is an understatement the last two weeks have been hell but I can move forward now. I do hope you have good news when you have yours. I can honestly say the procedure was fine the prep you have to take for it isn't pleasant but it's doable.

Im like you and didn't like the idea of sedation I hated gas and air when I gave birth to my daughter, I like to be in control of things but I was so anxious about what I was going through and what the results could be I went for the sedation and it was good I knew what was going on but it completely relaxed me, and I had a double dose of it, don't get me wrong their are parts of the procedure that's uncomfortable but it's not painful at all and it's over quite quickly the doctors and nurses who looked after me today were amazing and so reassuring through the whole thing. Having had the procedure I wouldn't be worried about ever having to have it done again..

I do hope yours goes ok and you get good news x

Hi just read your reply and as I've had 39 colonoscopys,,and will continue to have to have them for the rest of my life from time to time,I'm quite experienced in these things. Firstly  the sedation  if you have it ( I always have) doesn't put you completely out,you are still very aware of what is going on,and can watch everything on the screen if you choose to, but it realy relaxes you,and helps you to stay calm and still,as staying still is very important during  the procedure. It has never hurt,as ive had sedation, but it can be uncomfortable sometimes depending if its just the lower bowel, or the whole bowel they are looking at,ive had both. My advice to you would be to have the sedation, its only very mild and just relaxes you ,you have a cup.of tea and biscuits after the procedure  and feel fine. Although if you do opt for the sedation  you will be told  not to drive  or operate machinery  and have someone with you for 24hrs. But ive always felt fine after each one ive had,its just a precautionary measure on the hospital so that thry are safe guarded for insurance purposes I question. But ive always had someone with me ,and stuck to the advice given.

Yes the prep isn't nice,to be honest it's the worst part, but another piece of advice I can give you here is to use nappy cream around your anus  before you hit the toilet, as this helps with the soreness you will experience from having to keep going to toilet, you will find at times you need to sit on the toilet  for long periods of time. Try using papanthel nappy rash cream ,it really does help.  Hope all goes well for you .

  • That's great news, so pleased for you!
