Should I be worried or is this normal? Thyroid

HI there

I noticed swellingmon my lower neck 5/6 weeks ago. Sent photos to the GP, ended at ADOC that weekend as I was feeling extremely  restricted and they confirmed I had swelling of the thyriod. All bloods came back as fucntioning satisfactory and nothing to worry about but they referred me to ENT just incase. Had my app with endoscopy last week, was told to call for results but they wont give me the results, instead, I have to go next week for an ultrasound FNA biopsy. Is  this normal procedure or have they seen something worth investigating? Do they do these things if they don't see anything? Consultants words were "if we find anything, we will investigate more", but the secretary has told me they don't expect to find anything sinister.  Is it policy not to say anything over the phone? I am a very upbeat and positive person, but this is waying me down and I realise that I will have an extremely long wait for the resuls.

  • I think it is common for most thyroid nodules to be biopsied. There are apparently some that an ultrasound can show to be very low risk and which therefore, may not be, but I think they are a minority.

I think about 90% or more of thyroid biopsies find nothing sinister. As I kept chanting to myself when I was being tested "thyroid nodules are common; thyroid cancer is (comparatively) rare." The odds are the swelling is completely benign.

And even the worst case scenario isn't what you might be imagining. I had thyroid cancer two years ago and missed a month of work for and after the operation and that was that. I have been fine since. Obviously, nobody wants any form of cancer, but the most common for of thyroid cancer has close to a 100% survival rate for those under about 50 (and it's high for older people too, just not QUITE as high) and it doesn't usually require ongoing treatment like chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Ask if there is anything else you want to know.

  • Hi Margaret

Thamk you for your reply.  I do keep telling myself that there is no reason to worry about something that has not happened yet.  But you can't helpbut worry slightly.  Glad you wee able to make a speedy recovery. Is all ok now?

  • Absolutely. I had the two year check-up last Friday and while I haven't gotten the official word yet, the radiologist said all looked normal to her.

And yeah, it is very difficult not to think "but what if I am the 1 in 10 or 1 in 100 or 1 in 1,000 who has a bad outcome?" Best of luck.
