Breast scan- what to expect ?

Hi,

I have to go for a breast scan next week and was wondering what to expect? I have been getting puss, discharge and sometimes blood from my nipple for a few months now, doctor has tried a few courses of antibiotics nothing helped, they then decided to have a feel and said they could feel some areas that felt lumpier or swollen and my lymph nodes were inflamed on that side.

so have referred me for an ultrasound to see what the lumps are and biopsy if necessary, But due to covid I have to attend on my own, what should I expect? Obviously trying not to over think or worry about it until I know there is anything wrong but it is easy said than done some days

thanks x

  • Every hospital is different but when I got my scan and biopsy they took me into a room, a surgeon examined my breasts and asked a few questions about health, smoking etc.

Once that was done they took me for the ultrasound, its completely painless and they will let you look if you need to.

Then a quick tiny needle for local anesthetic, and depending on which biopsy it's either a fine needle aspiration or a core biopsy. The don't hurt but you will feel a bit tender later. They will talk to you and let you know every step they are taking.

Usually get results in 10 days but depending on the hospital they can take more or less time.

Good luck for your appointment, you'll be ok x
