Skin biopsy experience

Hi

I was wondering if anyone had any experience they could share that could help me understand some of the processes following a mole biopsy.

I had a biopsy of a mole 5 weeks ago. At the time the dermatologist explained that it looked like an atypical mole although it was taken off as a full excisional biopsy to check. I chased the results on Thursday last week and later got an answer machine message to say they have now got the results and a letter has been posted. I have had other biopsies in the past so assumed that all is well however I have noticed on my medical records app with my go that dermatology have booked me in for a follow up appointment for the beginning of Jan. I have never needed a follow up from a biopsy before so my mind is getting carried away whilst waiting for the results.

I was wondering if:

1.you have follow up appointments for atypical moles?

2.if it is skin cancer (at stage 0 or 1) would they let you wait two months before following up or completing a wide local excision

3.has anyone has similar happen interms of results being give by letter and what was the outcome?

I know I should just wait for the letter but it is on my mind alot and I am struggling to make sence of what they will be following up as the mole has been removed and I don't have any other odd moles.

Thank you for any help you can give

  • Hello Lisa42301

I'm sorry to hear that you're waiting on biopsy results at the moment. We know that waiting for test results can be a really difficult time for many people and it's natural to feel anxious and question things. Hopefully, the letter that you're waiting for will give you some information that will help reassure you. If you're still feeling unsettled about things once you've received the letter then do give the hospital or your GP a call.

Alternatively, if you'd like to chat with one of our team of nurses I'm sure they'd be happy to chat things through with you and offer any advice, information, and support that they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that you have some news soon.

    Best wishes,
