Should I get second opinion on this mole

Hello,

I was referred to dermatology for this mole. The GP said he was concerned about it because of the different colours and irregular border.

I went to the hospital and I think don't think I saw a dermatologist I saw a pathologist consultant. They looked at it through a dermascope and seemed pretty confident that it was nothing to worry about and it didn't need removal, just monitor it for any changes.

Should I get a second opinion? As should it not be removed of there is any doubt as to what it is? It seems to meet a few of the red flags to look for when looking for skin cancer.

Im sure the specialist is right, but I thought they would usually do a biopsy anyway to be sure and I thought I would have been seen by a dermatologist.

Im 26 the mole is probably about slightly less than an inch maybe an inch. It's got ragged borders and little dots in it that are a much darker brown than the rest of it.

I understand a GP can't be a specialist in everything. But I'm just confused how he was really concerned by it. But the person I saw in the hospital said it was nothing to worry about within 10 seconds of looking at it.

Thanks

  • Hi my experience was slightly different. My GP said it was nothing to worry about - but because of my history (cancer in the past and my father with Melanoma) I pushed for a hospital appointment. I'm glad I did as it turned out to be
melanoma. I would hope you saw someone knowledgeable at the hospital, but this is your life so if still worried a second opinion cannot hurt. Take care of yourself. Kelly

  • Hello.

    Hope you're doing better now!

Yeh true, I do think though at some point I've got to trust their opinion otherwise I'll constantly be in and out of appointments.

I would have thought if the specialist was in any doubt they would have done a biopsy.

  • Hi

I had a mole removed which had all the symptoms of being malignant. It was large, crust, irregular edges and itchy. The doctor removed it and sent it for testing and it came back benign. I hope that gives you some comfort.

However if I was you and in any doubt then I would get a second opinion or ask for it to be looked at privately.
