3cm armpit lump - 12 week wait for appt

Hi,

My armpit was tender while applying my deodorant for just over a week, but I never though to actually take a look until last Saturday, the skin was a bit red so I felt it and found a lump. Went to my GP on the Monday, by then the lump was no longer tender and skin no longer red, and she referred me to the breast clinic at the hospital where I work.

The lump was described by the GP as 3cm, fixed and irregular. But when I called to see how long I'd be waiting I was told I was triaged to "routine" and I would get an appointment in 12-15 weeks. That seems like a long time to me! I have health insurance so could try to go privately but just not sure what to do. Wondering if anyone has ever had similar symptoms or a similar experience with being changed to routine.
Thank you.

    Hi Gdub,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am surprised that your GP hasn't sent you as an urgent referral, when she found the lump.Have you phoned your GP to see if she meant to refer you under the routine pathway? Most referrals are under the urgent, 2 week pathway. 15 weeks does seem a long time to wait, as you are no doubt worrying about this. Perhaps another word with your GP might expedite matters?

In the meantime, I just want to assure you that not all lumps are cancerous. Some are benign cysts, hormonal or fibrous changes. It is also a fact that only 1 person in every 8 referred will get a cancer diagnosis and the younger you are, the less likely this is to happen.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
