My mother was recently diagnosed with her fifth cancer (and third type of cancer) aged 45. In the past 15 years, she's had cervical cancer cells removed, 3 bouts of skin cancer and she's recently had half of her thyroid removed because of a thyroid cancer diagnosis.
I'm particularly worried about the genetics of this, when I was 16 (I'm 19 now) I had to have a suspected melanoma removed and I have over a hundred moles, with several of them being atypical. My brothers have the same issue and it's remarkably odd because my grandparents haven't had a single bout of cancer and they're in their 70's.
Unfortunately, when I asked my mum if she could get tested, she insisted to me that the NHS would never recommend her for a genetic test, especially since her parents were healthy. Her parents also unfortunately live abroad, so they couldn't get tested if they tried.
Is there any way or place to get these tests done affordably? I'd just really like to be prepared if I am at risk, it's a scary thing to think about and not know... I know there's 23andme kits but they only check for a couple of Western European genes at risk (my family is Eastern European) so they wouldn't be very effective.
