I have a 2 week referral for breast cancer

I have had an urgent 2 week referral for breast cancer however I have just received a message this morning to say it can be 6 weeks before my appointment.

im very uncomfortable in my left breast and waiting scares me.Does anyone agree as I have private healthcare threw my hubbys work scheme. It would be advisable to have the referral and tests if needed done privately.

  • Hi,

Ask for waiting times at other local centres -maybe travelling another 10miles might get you seen sooner.

you can contact Pals ( patient advice liason service ) and see if they can assist.
if you have private healthcare though husband -then ask when you can be seen usually can pick what date ans time  -they usually see you privately and then add you to the NHS

Waiting for appoitments is awful. not all teferrrals turn out to be rubbish news -try and stay positive.

keep us posted with your progress

    Hi Fio,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

Waiting for an appointment is always an anxious time, whether you go through the NHS or go private. Within the NHS you are usually seen within 2 weeks and get all the tests you need straight away. If you go privately, you may be seen a little quicker initially, but if you need to be referred back to the NHs, this may involve another wait.

In many cases it is the same surgeon you see, regardless of which path you choose. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 12 years and honestly cannot fault the treatment I have had. The choice is up to you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • I know exactly how you are feeling as I am in the same boat waiting for a fastrack appointment.

I went to my GP on Monday concerned about a lump. To my surprise she told me it is quite large, 3cm and there is another the other side.

Within a few days I am sure it has got bigger so anxious I tried calling the appointments number to see if I could be seen sooner. The number was either engaged or just ringing until it rang off. I tried throughout the day and no one answered. It has only made my anxiety worse and I was so anxious and frustrated that I had an accident in my car on the duel carriageway on my way to work. Luckily, I am still alive.

There is nothing I can do about it but wait for my appointment. However, if I had to wait 6 weeks I would prob be tempted to go private...

The moral of the story is, I could have cause myself more harm from anxiety and worrying.

I am told after they have seen you, treatment is quick -if it is necessary. I hope you are seen sooner than 6 weeks x

    Hi Jen,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear that you are in the same boat too. This is always a worrying time. Have you had an appointment for the breast clinic through yet?

You have learnt a valuable lesson  with your accident, but I'm so glad that you are ok. We all panic at the mention of cancer, yet any one of us could be killed tomorrow just going about our daily duties and that never seems to cross our minds - strange old world isn't it?

Breast cancer is now one of the most treatable forms of cancer and outcomes are far less gloomy than they used to be.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,
    Jolamine xx

  • You could contact the doctor that has referred you to see if they can expedite the appointment for you. If you go down the private route you will probably be seen in a couple of weeks which may be all you need,  but you  may have to wait for mammogram or ultrasound as not every private clinic has them. Breast clinic is one stop and able to give you all mammogram, ultrasound scans/biopsies ect you may need. The surgeons are the same and can transfer you to nhs if you need treatment. The wait is usually two weeks when lm referred,  l know it's not easy waiting to be seen l try to keep busy even if it's just extra cleaning at home.
