Diarrhoea, positive FIT and elevated Calprotectin

Petrified..had a call from the doctors receptionist at 4.50pm last night (typical). FIT test, calprotectin and bacterial infection stool tests all abnormal. Mind is now in overdrive thinking the worst. Diarrhoea for about 4 weeks now with cramping and wind.  Bloods all normal.

Doctor called this morning to refer on the urgent 2 week pathway. FIT was 11.2 (so just over 10) and Calprotectin 175. Campylobacter also found.

I'm terrible when it comes to health anxiety.

  • It's another box ticked and a major weight off the shoulders and a relief to have a clear colonoscopy (of masses and polyps).

I had a bout in mid October but symptoms just went on and on (and still are) and then I had the positive fit test and elevated calprotectin value and gp then had no option (I think) but to send me on 2ww. Consultant said GP was probably over-cautious given the actual values but that GP's don't interpret the values. It's just black and white positive/negative.

Campylobacter can cause post infectious IBS or colitis. Indeed the consultant said he could see inflammation and proctitis on the scope, biopsies taken to understand if there is any inflammatory bowel condition e.g. microscopic colitis.

  • Im worried sick my results were similar to yours FIT test is 10 , calprotectin 99. something.

i went to the GP with Pensil thin stools.

Im trying to keep calm, but struggling, im looking on groups and beeing told a result of 10 is barely positive and not to worry, but i cant help it

  • Hello

Try to remain calm and positive (impossible I know).

Hopefully the GP will refer you for further investigation. If they don't then push for it.

My consultant told me that he wasn't that worried about my FIT result of 11.2 indeed the threshold for investigation is 40 in some cases. My Calprltectin score of 175 was what pushed things on.

I was 45 at the time and in the consultation prior to my colonoscopy the consultant said that given my age, FIT and Calprotectin results he would be amazed to find anything cancerous.

Ive since been diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and am currently on medication to manage it. It's not a great result but it could have been worse. At the very least it explained things. Apparently I've probably had it for years at a very low level but the Campylobacter episode gave it a kick start.
