Breast clinic referral

Hi,

I'm new to the forum however noticed a thickening in my left breast that felt ropey with a small hard lump back in September. I kept putting off making an appointment as I'm now 40 and thought could be down to hormonal changes and my periods. Due to no change and it aching yesterday I rang the doctors who confirmed a small lump and thickening. The doctor made a referral to the breast clinic for 3rd December. She said she was sure it would he OK but as my mom passed away with breast cancer a few years ago it was the best option. I'm trying not to worry however it's easier said than done. Any advice or help on what to expect would be appreciated thanks.

  • Hello Clegnut and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

You did the right thing in ringing the doctor and it sounds like your GP was reassuring and was being thorough given your family history. As you say it's easier said than done not to worry and it is normal to be anxious as you are waiting to find out more.

The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

There is some in-depth information on the Breast Cancer Now website on what to expect from your breast clinic appointment which I hope you will find helpful and which will help you prepare for your appointment.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been referred to the breast clinic before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,
