Worried about "Urgent referral" - can anyone ease my mind?

Backstory: I've been having unusual vaginal bleeding since April. I've also had alot of pain in my stomach and lower back, bleeding after sex and blood stained discharge. My GP did a few investigations (blood tests for hormone levels, ultrasound, cervical exam, swabs for infection and a course of antibiotics just incase it's was PID). He said that he couldn't find anything unusual. The only things he found was cysts on my ovaries (was diagnosed with PCOS years ago), and endometrial thickening but said it can be normal at my age (20) so nothing to worry about.

Because he couldn't find the cause of the bleeding he made a referral to community gynaecology at the beginning of September. Unfortunately there was some kind of mix up on the doctors side and it wasn't sent off until October 27th. They had a look at my case yesterday and called me to say that they were concerned about the endometrial thickening on the ultrasound and because I have a high BMI and PCOS, I am at higher risk of something being "abnormal". They said that they will be putting in an urgent referral to have some investigations at the hospital and somebody will be in touch within 2/3 weeks.

I am really overwhelmed and scared and have no idea what to expect. Has anyone been through similar or does anybody know that they might do? I think i just need some reassurance.

  • Hello Lobp29,

How unfortunate that there was a mix up on the doctor's side and that it wasn't sent off until the 27th of October. I am glad they are finally looking into it properly and that they had a close look at your case. I know you feel a little bit scared at the moment and understandably so because of what they have said but try not to draw any conclusions from what they said and not to interpret what was meant when they said you were at a higher risk of something being "abnormal". Their terminology was rather vague as at this stage they won't be able to give you a definite diagnosis so try not to think about what they have said. All you have to do really is wait for this urgent referral to come through and this can be the hardest thing as two or three weeks can feel like a lifetime. It's hard to know what to expect and what investigations you may have to go through so the best thing to do as you're waiting is to just take a day at a time and to keep busy and focused on other things avoiding looking things up on Google as this will only make you worry even more. There are helpful tips on this page on how to cope while waiting for important news.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,
