Post menstrual bleeding & been referred via cancer pathway

Hi i am 53 and I am having postmentral bleeding very heavy I have spoke to my doctor and she is referring me for a ultrasound scan urgently what could it be she is going down the cancer pathway because of my age and how heavy I have been bleeding  and it is bright red blood can anyone give me any advice as realy worried

  • Hi [@Jo95]‍

I have recently had a single episode of pmb which was quite light. I was also referred via the fast track pathway to Gynae. From what I have seen on the forums, this is fairly routine.

I received a call a week after referral for an appointment at the hospital. The appointment was for an examination including tranvaginal ultrasound (not bad) and then the gynaecologist took two biopsies (no anaesthetic which apparently seems to be the norm).  I won't kid you, the biopsies were painful but over very quickly (take ibuprofen / paracetamol beforehand). I had light bleeding and mild discomfort afterwards.

I am now waiting for the results which is by far the worst part! Everything else (cultures/smear has come back normal) and the consultant described everything as "fairly normal" (wished he hadn't said 'fairly') so keeping my fingers crossed. I hope sharing my experience helps you x

Try to stay calm (I know it's hard), read through these forums but don't Google! And remember, you have done the right and only thing you can do by seeing your GP and now it's just a process.

  • Hi fluffy thank u for getting back to me I am just so worried that it might be cancer the 2 periods in the space of 3 weeks have been realy heavy bleeds

  • It's the unknown that's the worry. I am doing my best to keep positive. I hope you get your appointment soon and as I understand it, you can call the hotline to talk to someone about what you are going through x
