Ultrasound & Biopsies... Waiting...

Hi, I am new to the forum... Not usually a forum sort of a woman but need some reassurance!

I saw my GP for post menopausal bleeding. (I am 47 years old and haven't had a period for 20 months). No other symptoms, it was a very light bleed over 5 days. She did an exam, couldn't see my cervix clearly (due to the angle). She did a swab and smear. I bled during smear. Swab has already come back negative but still waiting on smear.

I got referred to the hospital (I was seen in one week) for a transvaginal ultrasound and they took two biopsies after that. The consultant didn't explain much. I asked directly if any abnormalities were seen, his words were 'it looks fairly normal'. I have no idea how long the biopsies will take to come back nor if the smear test will be expedited!

For those that are due to have biopsies : Yes, they do hurt (I took 4 ibuprofen and still swore all the way through). You feel OK afterwards though!

My questions if anyone can help me!

1. Is it normal for biopsies to follow a 'fairly normal' ultrasound?

2. How long do you have wait for biopsy results?

Hoping someone can share their experiences x

  • Hi I had a normal scan and had a biopsy today.  I found it extremely painful!!  I think it's just belt and braces

I was told results would take a few weeks.

  • Hi [@Suex]

Thanks for the reply! Sounds like we have both had a fun day... Forgive my sarcasm! :silly:

Hope you are feeling better, I am still aching and bleeding but glad it's over.

Fingers crossed for our results x

  • Hi fluffy Buffy

Sorry for my late reply.  I had problems logging on

I am feeling better but tbh have felt slightly traumatized.  I am concerned it was so painful and it's making me worry why that was so.  I had sweeps when I was pregnant and they didn't feel like that at all !!!

Good luck with your results too.  I hope you're ok

    Speak soon

Yeah, I actually had a bad dream reliving the procedure!  I am still bleeding very slightly and experiencing tenderness. I am hoping it will subside, I've skipped exercise this week!

I've read quite a lot on the biopsy procedure and it appears we are not alone. Other women used words like barbaric, torture and the most painful thing they've experienced. (Apologies for scaring anyone else reading this but just be prepared and the worst only lasts for a minute).

I am going to chase my results next week as they didn't say how long it will take so I'm just going to be an advocate for myself and harass them as it's waiting that's really stressful. I was too shocked in the examination room to keep asking questions.

Keep me updated, hope you're feeling well in yourself x

  • Hi

Aw did you.  I didn't dream lol I just couldn't sleep!!!  I wasn't told beforehand I was having anything, I thought I was just getting the ultrasound results so didn't take any pain relief.  He did ask if he could do it and said as I have had 3 children it 'should' be Ok!!!.  So no pain relief no offer of pain relief and I just wasn't expecting it to hurt as I had read it was just like a smear.  As you know it was so NOT just like a smear.

I'm not exactly sure what he did but looking in to it it I think they just sucked out some cells lol.  Not quite a medical term but I don't know what it's called..  I'm more worried they'll say he didn't get enough cells as I heard the nurse say did you get enough.  My response lol was to say 'well you're not going back in'.  I feel barbaric is a good way to describe it and I just wasn't prepared.  Maybe if I had loaded up on pain killers it would be better and many many people say they found the procedure fine so this is not to scare people but inform and make sure you take a high level of pain killers!!!

I was fine after just tender.  Had like period pain and a little bleeding that lasted a few days.

I would chase up your results, or just ring and ask what happens next so you know where your at.  I was surprised you don't get any info on next steps etc but like you was a bit shocked to ask a lot .

Good luck and let me know how you get on.

    Sue

  • You're not going back in! Damn right... Glad you weren't too shocked to say that!

I had read that it could be uncomfortable (understatement) and my consultant did briefly mention a local if it was needed at the beginning of the consultation but I had read that is as uncomfortable / not recommended for some reason so I knew that anaesthetic was a last option.

TBH he was taking samples and I was swearing before I could say 'pain relief'. I guess as I bravely suffered, they didn't suggest any local anaesthetic! Maybe if I'd said no...

Yes basically sucked cells out of your body.

    Take care of yourself.

  • I know I was proud of myself cos I normally just go with the flow but it was like NO chance.  Sounds funny reading it back .!!

Oh I was thinking drugs next time lol but maybe not ....then it's just a no then !  My daughter says men wouldn't put up with it, it's cos it's women's pain they don't care .

Aw well you take care and look after yourself.  Let me know how you get on xx

  • Just an update as I received a copy of the gp letter from my consultant yesterday.

It states that I had a pipelle endometrial sample and a punch biopsy on (what the consultant described as) a ectropion like lesion on my cervix.  Everything else seemed normal. Endometrial lining 3.3mm, no masses etc.

Reading about ectropion (which is just a variation of normal in the cervix world), this usually is present in younger women who have hormones flying around and not post menopausal women. It can also look like early stage cervical cancer but I am taking solace in the fact that I had a normal smear.

So, really still left in limbo until the biopsy results can give me an answer which will be more definitive! Planning on contacting them next week to ask how long the results will take.

I'll keep you informed of the outcome....

  • Final update from me. I phoned the med sec today who said that she was due to write up the letter and would call me back.

She did, checked my details and asked if I was happy to read it out. Everything is normal! Yay! Such a relief...  I will expect the letter tomorrow so that will allow me to stop worrying.

I hope my journey helps anyone who is worried. Sending those with less fortunate news hugs x

  • Amazing news Fluffybunny!

I'm sure your experience will definitely help others who are currently in this position so thank you for keep us updated and letting us know about your outcome.

    Now, time to relax
