Rising ca125

I know ca125 can be elevated for lots of reasons, but are there any non-cancer causes of a serial (albeit small) increases in ca125?

mine have gone from 34-41-45 over the past 5 months ... they are doing them again in a few weeks.

 Thank you

  • Hi Chlot712 and welcome to the community.

I'm sorry to hear your ca125 levels have been raised recently but as you'll see on this NHS webpage, 'a raised CA125 level does not mean you definitely have cancer, as it can also be caused by other conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids and even pregnancy.'

Lab Tests Online UK also state that 'CA125 can be high in many normal or benign conditions (for example, pregnancy, menstruation, uterine fibroids, endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease). A CA 125 test isn't accurate enough to use for ovarian cancer screening in the general population, because many noncancerous conditions (such as those described above) can increase the CA125 result.'

I hope this helps to put your mind at ease but if you'd feel better talking things through with someone then you're welcome to give our cancer nurses a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Thank you. My concern isn't that my ca125 is raised as I understand that can be caused by lots of things, it that it has increased at each blood test - I understand that a seriel increase points to cancer, but i was wondering if there are still benign reasons for it.

Figure 2 in this paper implies the cause of levels progressively rising over time is malignancy.

  • Sorry Chloe, I misinterpreted what you were asking.

Unfortunately I can't answer your query about the continuous increase but our team of cancer nurses will be in a better position to help so if you would like to get their thoughts on this and the discuss the article you've found in more detail do give them a call on the number I gave you in my previous post.

Fingers crossed your next test results show no more increase.
