Neck glands under jaw

Has anyone had experience with a neck gland changing shape? I've had problems with my glands for as long as I can remember, namely my left gland always being up quite large for no apparent reason and my right gland rarely being up at all. They've always felt the same, I'd say a very large+slightly long grape shape/size. Recently though, my right gland has changed shape and it seriously feels as if it has split in two. Glandular fever test negative. The gland is actually quite sore, and very hard, but mobile. I've also had tonsillitis 7 times in the last 3 months and also had appendicitis and 2 chest infections, so the GP is worried there could be something deeper going on to lead to this many infections and has also done an urgent referral to ENT as I've lost nearly 16kg in 3 months due to tonsillitis, I'm a very very small girl as it is, I now look anorexic and it's really affecting me. I'd just like to know what are the chances of it being something to do with my glands and if so, do you think it could be something bad? Thank you

  • Hi - sorry you have been so unwell. Obviously no one can rule out something serious but i hope it puts your mind at rest a little to hear that tonsillitis can make you VERY poorly and immuno compromised - especially when they become chronically infected. It used to be that if you'd had it 3/4 times in a year they took them out? Am presuming that is what the urgent referral is although am surprised your GP has waited this long to refer you.

In my mid twenties i began to get tonsillitis repeatedly. I too was very small and i started to lose weight rapidly - i even got a ticking off by hospital staff who am sure thought i had an eating disorder! I was on constant antibiotics for 6 months and i felt constantly grim. As a child when i got it - i then used to get everything going as i got so run down so it could just be to do with your poor tonsils. I too have always had issues with my glands coming up and down, even from being a small child. I hope you get seen really soon and can only advise you eat as much as possible - anything and everything you fancy and can cope with x
