Breast lump

Hi, I found a small breast lump just before my 3 yrly mammogram in March 2021, the result came back clear. About 4 weeks ago the lump grew very large & was red & hot, most of my breast was red & swollen & painful. 2 wks ago GP prescribed antibiotics as thought infection. Redness, heat & breast swelling have cleared & the lump has got a bit smaller. GP is making an urgent referral to breast clinic & has said the lump is firm, felt under my arms & seemed ok. I've had benign lumps before & a radial scar removed 4 yrs ago. This lump feels different & I am scared as if it is sinister it's been there since March! I'm stressed & not sleeping, trying to stay calm but it's difficult. Just needed to share with others who understand. Thank you

  • Hello PinkJ and welcome to our online community.

I'm very sorry about the lump you've found and for the worry and stress this is causing but hopefully it won't be long until your appointment with the breast clinic comes through and you're able to get some answers.

As you've pointed out in your post, many of our members will definitely understand what you're going through at the moment and hopefully some of them will be along soon to offer you their support and advice.

I hope this article I've found on how to cope with waiting for news will help you stay calm but if you feel it may help to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses then you're welcome to get in touch with them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Fingers crossed everything will be o.k PinkJ.

    All the best,

  • Hi Steph,

Thank you so much for getting in touch.

I followed the link you included and it is sound advice. I am 66 yrs old & happily married & my husband is a wonderful support but it is difficult as I'm possibly not as patient as normal. We don't have children but I am very close to my nieces who are more like daughters & friends as they are in their early 50s but I don't want to trouble them as they all work & have families. I've had lumps before but this one seems different & my mind is 'running riot'. I'm extremely weary which I think is because of worrying, I have a knot in my chest constantly & feel nauseous. I've focussed on getting Xmas gifts in for everyone & whilst I normally make my own greetings cards I can't face it & have ordered online.

I'm embarrassed thst I'm not coping well, I thinking the waiting is a difficult time. I'm hanging on in there & trying to be positive but it's really tough

    Many thanks

    Kind Regards

    Joan

  • Hi everyone,

I've been awaiting an appointment for the breast clinic as it's a week since my GP made the urgent referral & I've not heard anything. As you will all know the waiting is awful.

By chance I accessed my records via the NHS app& found that an appointment has been arranged for 25th November. Select thr Hospital appointment s cancel or manage & it will show if one has been booked. Basically just to let everyone know if they haven't had any written confirmation. I'm assuming the admin side must take a while!

Best wishes to everyone going through this difficult time.
