DCIS Concern

Hi, I'm a 39 year old female with a strong history of Breast Cancer within my family (Aunties, Granparents, Cousins). I found a lump which I have been told this week is a 6mm cyst. I had a Mammogram, followed by an examination where although they could see the cyst on my mammogram they said they had concerns about my other breast from the Mammogram.

I had an ultrasound and the Consultant kept saying to the Nurse 'DCIS' and made reference to Calcifications. They did biopsies and inserted a clip and now I am waiting on my results. They said they are trying to 'build a picture' as I have a multi sepatated cyst and asymmetry. I am just worried given the words they use during my ultrasound and said they cannot say if it is cancer or not.

Has anyone had similar experience? I have looked up DCIS to find out more but now waiting on biopsies results for the next few weeks.

    Hi KB18.

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am glad to hear that the lump you were worried about is only a cyst. With regard to your other breast :-

I know that it's almost impossible, but try not to panic, until you know exactly what you are dealing with. "DCIS is an early type of non-invasive breast cancer. The cancer cells are inside the milk ducts and have not yet developed the ability to spread, either through the ducts into surrounding breast tissue or to other parts of the body.

If DCIS is not treated, the cells may develop the ability to spread and become invasive breast cancer.

Treatment for DCIS aims to remove the cancer before it develops the ability to spread. Currently there is no single approach to treating DCIS and the treatment you're offered will depend on factors such as the extent of the DCIS, the grade and where it is within the breast. Treatment will usually include surgery (either breast-conserving surgery or a mastectomy with or without reconstruction) to remove the affected area. Breast-conserving surgery may be followed by radiotherapy." (Ref: Breast Cancer Care).

Try not to google your symptoms until you know exactly what you are dealing with, as this will only scare the pants off you and serve no useful purpose. Much of the information is poorly researched, out of date and aimed at the most spectacular of cases.

Please keep in touch andlet us know how your results go. Have you got a date to get them yet? Remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

Many thanks for your reply and the advice you gave. Really kind of you. I have to wait 3 weeks they said for my Biopsy results. They just said they are "trying to build a picture and don't know if it is Cancer or not".

I am concern about the cyst as it was multi sepatated, so not sure if that means its a complex cyst. I will just have to wait and see. I just find the fact I overheard the Consultant say DCIS during my ultrasound to the Nurse worrying and the wait is causing anxiety.

    Thank you x

  • Hi KB18,

DCIS is an early type of cancer. If you have to have cancer, this is one of the better types to have. It is treatable and that's the important thing to hold on to. Not all cancers are a life sentence. As many as 1 person in 2 now have it, yet we are still going about our daily business and living busy and fulfilled lives. I myself have had 2 bouts in the past 12 years and count myself as one of these fortunate people.

This wait is always an anxious time and our imagination leads us to all sorts of dark places. Try to keep yourself as busy as possible while you are waiting.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
