Lump in reconstructed breast after a double mastectomy

Hey,

hoping someone may have some experience of this. I had a double mastectomy and reconstruction 6 years ago using the diep flap method. The cancer hadn't spread to my lymph nodes but after surgery 3 separate tumours were found in my right breast 2 of which hadn't been detected.
yesterday I came across a hard mush pea size lump fairly close to the initial lump (I can tell due to the scar from the original lumpectomy. I have been to see the gp today who has immediately referred me back to see the consultant.
has anyone else had similar?

hoping it's nothing

  • Hello Lauzlj84 and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry to hear you've found another lump close to where your initial lump was but I'm glad you went to your GP and hopefully it won't be long until you get to see your consultant.

I know this will be a worrying time but I'm glad you've joined us as many members of our community have been in similar situations so I'm sure some of them will be along soon to offer their support and share their experiences and advice.

In the meantime, we'll have our fingers crossed this lump is no cause for concern.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you Steph,

saw my consultant this on Wednesday afternoon, although says feels like fat necrosis she sent me for an ultra sound amd the dr has taken biopsies due to it not determinable on the scan. I get the results next wed afternoon. She didn't really give much away only that it didn't have the usual characteristics of fat necrosis. I am really struggling emotionally I am a mum to 4 children one who is 5 this coming weekend. I haven't come across anyone who has been in a similar situation 6 years after mastectomy so feel really alone I know how everyone is totally different in this journey too!

  • I'm sorry you're having a tough time and feeling alone at the moment.

The wait for results is always tough and it does seem to become more challenging as you get closer to finding out, but I hope the advice given in this article on how to cope with waiting for news will help get you through the next few days.

I really do hope some of our members get back to you soon but in the meantime we're thinking of you and sending our support your way.

Fingers crossed for good news on Wednesday Lauzlj84.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Lauzlj84,

I saw your post on here and just wanted to reach out to say hello.

Waiting for results is terrible and can drive you nuts. I haven't had my surgery yet (double mastectomy) as I:m having ajuventic Chemotherapy first. (Start next week) So I can't give you the advice you seek.

I hope your biopsy results come back quickly and are ok

    Sending love and hugs, Lily

  • HI Lauzj,

I am glad to hear that you have had an ultrasound and biopsies and sincerely hope that it will be good news for you on Wednesday. I had a lumpectomy in 2009 and a double mastectomy in 2010. I have had a fw scares since then after finding small lumps. In all cases it turned out to be scar tissue which had changed shape over the years, but nothing sinister was found.

I do hope that you find the same. Please let us know how you get on on Wednesday. We are always here for you.

Keeping my fingers crossed for good news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! Yes it's the waiting that gets to you I think having been here before I feel much more knowledgable this time around!
