Positive FIT test, 31 yr old female

Hi all,

Im a 31 year old female and yesterday recieved positive FIT test (> 300). I have been urgently referred on 2WW and dr says I should hear from hospital by Monday with next step.  I have no other symptoms apart from some intermittent abdominal pain, so I think seems unlikely anything serious is wrong. But from reading I have found that 1 in 10 people with a positive FIT test do turn out to have cancer, which is a scarily high number.  Could someone have colon cancer without any other symptoms?!

I'm also really worried that the next step will involve a colonoscopy. I had one of these about 5 years ago and it was the most painful experience I've ever had, I'm not sure I could do it again. Is a colonoscopy always the next step after positive FIT test??

Thanks all for your help

Jen xx

  • Hiya, I'm sorry you're going through all this worry. I hope for the best news for you.

unfortunately I believe the colonoscopy is usually the process, I'm sorry you had a bad experience last time. Did you opt for sedation previously? My mum has bowel cancer, during her colonoscopy she was sedated and she said it was uncomfortable (particularly when they took a biopsy) but not really painful because of the sedation. Maybe you could talk through your experience with the consultant you see and they can put your mind at ease.

  • Hi Djangofan,

Yes I did have sedation last time, which made me relax but I could still feel everything. I think the pain was from when they blow air to inflate the colon, I just experienced excruciating pain when they did this. I have read a lot of people saying it shouldn't be painful, so I'm not sure why I found it so bad. I did find some research saying that younger females tend to experience more pain during colonoscopy due to reproductive organs in the same area?? Maybe I will be able to get pain relief or be put under anaesthetic if I need it again??

    Thanks :)

    Jen

  • I think if you discuss your worries and experiences from last time with the consultant I'm sure they'll do what they can to prevent a repeat of your last time.
They have always been fabulous with my mums needs.

  • While I believe it is possible to have colon cancer without any other symptoms, it is also worth remembering that one in ten people who have a high FIT result getting a diagnosis of colon cancer also includes people much older than you (I think more than 90% of those with colon cancer are over 40) and people with multiple symptoms. The odds are most people who take a FIT test in the first place are either older or experiencing symptoms, so the odds of cancer in your case may well be lower than 1 in 10. And even 1 in 10 still means 9 out of 10 do not. With very little other symptoms and at an age when colon cancer is unlikely, the odds are that you will be among the 9 out of 10 who do not have colon cancer. Though I know this is limited reassurance as even a small chance of cancer is terrifying.

  • Hi Jen,

I'm 31 and today found out I have a positive FIT result, little nervous as I know I'm likely to be referred on a TWW. I'm speaking with my GP tomorrow but just wondering if you've had any results since you posted this last year?

    hoping that everything went okay,

    thank you for any advice
