Why would a cyst or lesion form on a lymph node?

I was told that I have a 12mm by 8mm lesion on one of the lymph nodes in my mediastinum.  
I've just had a CT scan with contrast and I'm waiting for results.

Doctors and gp keep saying probably nothing to worry about but I have yet to find any information that is something normal to happen.

They described it on my first report as 'in keeping with cystic degeneration of the the node' 

any indication of what it could be would be greatly appreciated. 

I don't have any symptoms really and it was found accidentally whilst examining something else.

please be honest, I want to feel prepared for potiential outcomes x

    Unfortunately no-one here can say what this could be but hopefully it won't be long until your results come through and bring good news with them.
