Slightly concerned

Hi all,

Im a 33yr old male.

I've been reading up etc which I know is bad but it's got me in a state and my GP hasn't really reassured me in the slightest and I'm currently sat here with no diagnosis or help so far.

So I've been suffering from almost constant abdominal discomfort in the lower left and right of my abdomen for over 4 months. My bowel movements are altering and the stool type changes from constipation to loose and some days the frequency goes right up. I've noticed a lot more mucus (yellow). I've seen a few times undigested food like a clump of rice... At one bowel movement recently there was bits of blood in the mucus (fresh) but it was there. I've noticed when bending or doing anything as such, when releasing that posture it seems to feel worse or "hurt" by it e.g. like if you rub a cut or something.

I've tried Buscopan and then Mebeverine. No effect.

I've had Calproctectin done two months ago which was 15/100 for normal. I had a slightly elevated CRP of 18.

I then had a F.I.T two weeks ago and that's resulted in a value of 4. My new bloods now show a marginal increase in inflammation with CRP now at 54. I also had Ferritin done and that was normal along with fbc.

The GP said that they are now concerned by the increase in inflammation and want to referrr to gastro for advice but no referral yet for any procedure.

However, I know this is irrational maybe, but I'm bricking it, extremely anxious over this being cancer as when I asked the Dr )and read on this forum, even negative FIT means it can still be there) they didn't rule it out which has sent me in full panic mode.

It's constant daily discomfort like my lower bowels have been torn, stretched and worse when walking around. Its because it's not gone or settled in any way is what really is concerning to me.

I'm bordering on booking a private consultant and paying for an endoscopy which I've seen the cost and it's crazy but I'm loosing my mind and it seems like the GP is acting so slowly over this. I know my results might give reassurance but the constant of the pain and changes cancel those out for me.

  • Hello Jack_2

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with some ongoing health problems. It's understandable that you're feeling worried especially when you're in pain every day.

I know that many of our members here will understand how difficult this period of waiting for referrals, tests, and results can be. The unknown is a scary prospect and unfortunately trawling the internet for information often leaves people feeling even more worried and anxious and still without answers. Try to take each day at a time and avoid looking too far ahead. There could be many causes for the symptoms that you're dealing with and hopefully, the Gastro Consultant will be able to help you get a handle on things.

If you'd like to chat through your concerns with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

I do hope that things improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Update:

Had the Flexible Sigmoidoscopy (it was painful at times for me)- all went well thankfully, but waiting now for consultant to ring me tomorrow.

No mention of what's causing the constant lower abdominal pains as of yet.

  • Hi Natalie,

I was told by the consultant it'd be unlikely to be anything sinister but still a small chance it could be so they still need to rule it out. I'm still having ongoing discomfort, which is keeping my anxiety going about it.

I'm on the list to now have an MRI to look at the small intestine and the rest of the abdomen. No date for this yet though. It's a horrible waiting game.

Even though the sigmoidoscopy was all ok, I worry that because it wasn't a colonoscopy they haven't seen all of the large bowel and anything could be there.

Ive progressively lost some weight as well which isn't great but monitoring it at the moment. I'm hoping it's down to the anxiety and stress of this causing it.

  • It's horrible isn't it the waiting game.. my CRP is high and ive got a small pea sized lump in my breast, lost 2 family members including my parent this year to cancer so I have so much anxiety I'm not eating really or anything as I'm worried constantly, wishing you well and good results
