Pre diagnosis cervical cancer symptoms

Hi

I have had regular periods up to 4 months ago when they stopped and started within days and basically I've had vaginal bleeding now for about 12 weeks pretty much daily. Wondered if it had been caused by covid jab and I'm 48 so possibly peri menopausal. No pain or other symptoms of note. I contacted GP after 7 weeks who advised me to see how it went, so returned last week. Bloods taken indicate extremely low iron, smear and swabs came back normal. Cervix appeared normal on GP examination. They've referred me to gynaecology because of ongoing bleeding and appointment next Friday... I'm really worrying about it! Any advice re what will happen in the appointment? Should I take my partner with me? Thanks.

  • Hi Clana

At my first appointment I had a chat first with the gynaecologist to go over symptoms, which for me were post menopausal heavy bleeding, discharge and pelvic pain. Then I had an internal examination. He took a couple of punch biopsies but that was because he could clearly see there was something there that shouldn’t be! I had a hysteroscopy, which is a tiny camera which goes up into the womb, also. None of this was painful, just a little uncomfortable.

I would stress that this is my experience, and may well not be yours, but at the very least they will want an internal examination. I would be reassured by a normal smear and the fact that your doctor said your cervixit looked normal. Bleeding can be for many reasons other than cancer, and the referral is just to make sure that a specialist can make an assessment. Good luck with your appointment, and let us know how you get on.x
