Urgent referral absolutely terrified

I've been having on going issues with my throat and neck. I've been getting recurring sore throats and have a swollen gland under my jaw as well as some form of lump lower down next to my throat I've seen 3 doctors the first doctor checked them and did blood tests which came back normal. I could still feel the lumps so I went back to see my normal GP who wasn't worried said the node was a reactive lymph node that would go away on its own and wasn't very big so she wasn't worried (she didn't say anything about the lump lower down) I'm still getting sore throats pretty much daily and I can still feel lumps in my neck. I spoke to a locum doctor this morning who seemed concerned and said from what the doctor wrote the lump is quite big!! He's prescribed me penicillin and referred me to the hospital urgently to check whether there is any cancer. Nobody has even mentioned the C word to me until today and he has me absolutely terrified, why would my doctor say she wasn't concerned about the size but this doctor has said he is?! I'm so anxious now I just want to cry

  • Hello KJ12389,

It can be unsettling to be told contradictory things by different doctors - I think the best approach at the moment is to put everything they've said at the back of your mind as no one can really tell what is going on until you have had further tests and been seen at the hospital.

So I know it's easier said than done but the best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

I hope you won't have to wait too long for your hospital appointment and that you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

  • Just wanted to update in case anyone does find this and is going through something similar. I saw an ENT yesterday he checked my neck and said what the doctor felt was part of the normal neck structure I have recently lost 37lb in weight so he believes the reason it has been so noticeable is due to weight loss. I had a camera into my nose to look at my throat and he said it looks healthy my other symptoms (sore throat, feeling like I have a lump in my throat and croaky voice mostly) is likely due to silent reflux. Again he said this is possibly due to weight loss as I am using intermittent fasting as part of my diet the stomach acid is likely coming up easier because I'm going long periods without food. I have been prescribed Omeprazole and gaviscon. He was absolutely lovely quite possibly the nicest doctor I have ever met and was extremely informative and helpful I left my appointment feeling so much better.
