Worried about my husband

My husband has been fatigued for about six months. In the last couple of months his legs/ankles and one of his hands started swelling, and he had some testing done. He's had an ECG, two lots of blood tests which showed slightly low platelets and low albumin, and an abdominal ultrasound. The ultrasound has shown he has an enlarged spleen. He now has an urgent referral to haematology at the local hospital.

I have an anxiety disorder and I'm so, so worried about him. We've been together since we were kids and we're 38 now. We have three lovely kids together. I can't help but think the worst. I know I shouldn't google it but I can't help it, and it keeps coming back to leukemia and lymphoma.

I'm so scared.

  • Hi Xephercat.

I'm what we call a spleenie, someone with a spleen related issue.  I actually lost mine through trauma however in the support groups I belong to on FB there are many different patients with different reasons for being in the group.

I hope its ok to say on this board, admin please forgive me if not, but the Haematology website can be very useful.  Spleen stuff tends to have quite a small circle of clear information and we don't have a support charity but there are support groups out there where people can help with their experiences which might help settle your anxiety.

Google always springs a cancer no matter what you search in my experience, and as theres so little spleen info out there its probably dominating the results, additionally you add in the strange blood results than spleen issues present which adds another layer.  My drs didnt understand the blood changes after I had my spleen removed and this was the route they took until a haemotology speacialist reviewed my bloods and pointed out it was entirely normal for a spleen patient.

I hope some of this is reassuring, I cant give you any answers only to share my experiences.  I hope you arent waiting too long for the appointment, the waiting is horrible.  I'm 3 weeks in to a wait for biopsy results and completely understand the anxiety.  Feel free to message me (I'm not sure how it works here)
