Getting mole checked, worried it’s melanoma

Hi guys,

So I have this mole on my back and I didn't really notice it until this year, my mum has said I've had it from a young age though.

It doesn't really look like any of my other moles, it's asymmetrical and not quite round. I think the edges look blurred too but I've only ever seen it properly in a photo that my partner took on Monday. As soon as I saw the photo I began to panic and put in an e-consult to see a doctor and was given an out of hours appointment for Saturday.

The other thing bothering me is that sometimes my back gets itchy in the same spot and have now found by taking a video that it's the mole/the area around the mole that's itchy which is also making me feel very anxious.

I have pretty bad health anxiety so I'm really not having a good time right now and I'm only 25 so I'm terrified that I've got a form of cancer at such a young age. We don't have any history of cancer in our family which I think is a good thing and means that it may not be but the panic is taking over.

Just really needed to put this somewhere where people may be knowledgable and be able to alleviate my fears.

Thanks!

  • Hello float4evs,

You've taken the right steps in getting this mole checked and I hope that your appointment goes well tomorrow. I know it's really hard especially as you suffer from health anxiety but try not to anticipate what it may be at this stage. It won't be long before you have some answers so try and focus on other things if you can and avoid using Google to look pictures of moles or anything up as this will only make your health anxiety worse.

Hopefully you will meet others on this forum who have been in a similar position before and they will be able to alleviate your fears by sharing their experiences with you. Do mention to your doctor though that you have been feeling this itchiness on your back and that it seems to be located in the mole area. This is information that will be useful to your GP but don't worry there can be so many different explanations for this itchiness.

I hope all goes well for you tomorrow at your appointment - everything crossed!

    Best wishes,
