Positive qfit test and high calprotectin in stool sample

Hi everyone hoping for some advice as I'm very anxious.I am 30 years old and suffered from IBS since about age 19. Had an endoscopy and colonoscopy in 2015 and only stomach inflammation found. Ibs seems to be getting worse so had stool sample and qfit test which have both came back abnormal and I've been referred for colonoscopy. Every forum seems to point to bowel cancer and I'm terrified!

My symptoms are ongoing constipation, stomach bloating and fatigue. I also have haemmhroids.

any advice and help would be appreciated!

  • hiya dawn,

awww so sorry to hear the worries you're going through, i totally understand. i'm 25 and had a qfit of something like 56, not very common for our age group but could be worse i guess... i also recently found out about family history of lynch syndrome which my mum didn't tell me about  have been very much worrying about possible bowel cancer or an adenoma, which at our age would suggest a genetic link. i'm hoping to god it's nothing i can't deal with, i just want to live even 20 years longer without cancer! i originally went about an intense pain under my left rib, didn't expect this at all.

your symptoms are a bit similar to mine, i mainly started having errr constipation about 3 months ago. did they tell you what your qFIT number was? when is your colonoscopy, do you know yet? mine is meant to be on the 5th, but they also added on an endoscopy a few days later so not sure if they'll do that the same day or move it ahead. try stay strong, i know it's so hard and i'm struggling to follow my own advice. the only thing i can think is to pretend it's not happening or real. then when we have the colonoscopy we can take it from there. it could be IBD, or diverticulitis etc! i'm sending u all the good vibes for your colonoscopy, let's hope it's better news for us!

  • Thanks so much for your reply! I'm sorry your going through something similar.

I don't know what my result was she just said it was abnormal but I know my stool sample calprotectin was 300. I've not heard when my colonoscopy is yet - I'll keep you posted and fingers crossed for us both x

  • awww no problem, i also want to talk to people going through something similar cause it's hard for my family and friends to understand lol!

ohhh i see, did she tell you it was going to be an urgent referral? sorry if that's a stupid question, i'm just checking cause originally one of my GPs kept brushing it off and referred me non urgently despite being over 10 is an urgent referral. i had to go to a dr at a&e for advice and him and his boss wrote a letter of strong recommendations to get her to refer me urgently finally! i think it took from the friday for the urgent referral to getting the letter on the following thursday. although i live in scotland so not sure if things are faster or slower.

awww sorry to hear about the raised calprotectin levels xx i read a little about that but i don't know much about it, it looks like there's at least some inflammation level in your bowels. the fact that you're also having constipation i would be hopeful about possible some bowel inflammation or maybe early ulcerative colitis which can definitely be treated. of course we have no idea until we get the colonoscopy though, but i'm rlly hoping yours goes well xx

they did a calprotectin test for me too after the qFIT, but they never tell me the results unless i phone them up like what happened with the qFIT! i've told myself i'd rather just not know as i might think too much if it's low and think too much if it's higher haha xx

  • I understand why you don't want the results of it!

yes definitely an urgent referral she told me gastro should be in contact in the next few weeks about a colonoscopy. In Scotland too!

  • Have you had your colonoscopy yet?

  • Hi how are you both? I'm in a similar situation. Bad Tummy/ibs symptoms but blood on my stool and a calprotectin level of 120 xxx
