Fast growing Breast Cancer

had a breast cancer scare 5 years ago. I had all the tests; mammograms, scans & lots of biopsies on my left breast. At the time I was told it was just cysts & discharged. 2 years later I had a negative mammogram.

My next routine mammogram is due next month. However I felt a hard area in my left breast and have just come home from the breast clinic.

I have been advised that I probably have breast cancer as the mammogram & scan have shown a suspicious mass of about 5cm. I'm now waiting for biopsy results (they also took a sample from a lymph node under my armpit )

I'm worried sick.

Has anyone else experienced such a fast growing tumor. How come it didn't show up on my last mammograms? I've never missed one.

  • Hi Esme, I know this wasn't to me and I'm sure Lily will respond, but I saw this and felt and recognised your anguish. I had a clear mammogram within ten months of finding a lump, which did turn out to be cancer and when I questioned that I was told that cancer can just pop up over night by a Breast Care Nurse. I had no pain with this lump and I await a masectomy and reconstruction which is due to take place on 14th December.  This week I had another scare and had to go to emergency apt at the breast clinic again yesterday morning because I found a lump in the other breast same area as the cancerous one earlier in the week. I was trying to stay calm about it - went to GP who said hopefully just fibrous (which is what they said before) but should get it checked out, phoned breast nurse who said I’d have to come in for 8.30 before clinic. She also said you only had a mammogram within 3 months which was clear on that breast and so it couldn't be cancer (this was the same nurse who previously told me that they could pop up over night. Saw consultant who said I’m probably just anxious and then examined me and said oh ok, there is a lump, we’ll try to sort an ultrasound asap, but probably not for a few days (trying not to panic) anyway I was told to wait and they obviously spoke outside and BCN went straight to ultrasound to ask them to see me before clinic, which they kindly agreed to. Upshot, scanner thinks it’s glandular tissue, which I could feel as close to ribs, she took some shots for consultant but told me she was satisfied - phew!!!  I guess what I'm saying is the fact you have pain is positive and most lumps are benign - I have only found two in my life and 50/50 for me.  I know you will worry, I did, we all do, but the signs are good and if it is cancer they will treat it and you will get support from this forum if you want it - sending you a virtual hug and positivity Mickey xx  ️

  • Fabulous news Pauline, thanks for posting such great news.

  • Well done hun hope you have a speedy recovery, I am still having breast pain ,but think due to none cylindrical breast pain comes and goes according to Dr. I hope it will settle and been reassured by nurse that if anything came on scanor mammogram they would do more investigation she just said go home and don't worry.maybe my high anxiety causes pain to. Anyway enough of my waffle you are so brave and strong. I find that my strength comes from my fain in God. I am a jehovah's wittness and the hope for man's future at moment is hard to deal with and we all need hope for better future.please keep safe and thank you for your kind care. • Hi Mickey. Sorry to but in. I've just been diagnosed with bc today, ten months after a clear mammogram too so just wanted to make contact. I went to see consultant as have a history of cysts in left breast and that breast was starting to feel a bit troublesome again. It was just cysts again but she found suspicious lumpiness in right breast which has turned out to be cancer. I'd been totally unaware of the lump. Huge shock. I have an MRI booked for the weekend to get more details about what we're dealing with. Anyway we're talking surgery for definite, possibly in 3-4 weeks but won't know full diagnosis for two weeks. I'm seriously struggling to cope.

How are you feeling after your surgery?

    Claire

  • Hi Claire,

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis today, it's such a shock to hear those words Breast Cancer. No need to apologise ever, that's exactly what this forum is for to provide information support for everyone as much or as little as they want it.

Ten months after a clear mammogram hit me too, I couldn't believe it and thought they must have missed something on my mammogram. How could all that cancer have just popped up overnight. I know you won't feel it now, but it does get easier.  It is a complete rollercoaster and I won't deny that, but with support and kindness you do move through the stages from denial to acceptance and obviously in terms of treatment into action.

I'm six weeks post masectomy and diep right breast reconstruction tomorrow. I have to say, I have been really lucky in my recovery having only had a few minor niggles that were easily sorted. I went for my first little jog today - I haven't been since August and despite having to take it very gently, it felt great for me.

Have they told you anything about the type of cancer yet? I expect they are waiting for all your results from MRI etc, but I know sometimes they do tell you 'snippets'.

It's totally ok to feel that you can't cope, we all get that and still feel that way at times wherever we are on that rollercoaster.  You've made the first important step of reaching out for support and I hope that helps you a little.

I'm sending you a massive virtual hug and I'm here for any chat if you want any time. Love Mickey xx ️

  •  Hi Mickey

Thank you so much for your reply. She said grade 2, it's a 2cm lump but they're not really sure how big it is. She said something about treating me for a cure (?), used "hopefully" somewhere and needing to find out "her2"?

I'm so desperately upset for my children and parents who I haven't told yet. My girls are 16 to 22. My husband has been great but I'm so scared about the future.

It's good to hear you're doing so well. I really appreciate your contact and kind words.

    C.

  • PS. You're having more surgery tomorrow? All the best. X

  • Hi Claire, sorry I was probably confusing. I meant tomorrow it will be six weeks since my surgery xx

  • Hi Claire,

Its all confusing I know - but once they know your HER2 status and hormone status (oestrogen particularly, but also progesterone) they will be able to tailor your treatment to you specifically. Grade 2 is easily treatable, so that's really positive.

I understand your family concerns, it's good your husband knows and is being super supportive. Try not to worry about anyone else for now. When you know what your treatment plan is, you will feel the right decisions around who and when to tell. Please don't burden yourself with that also right now.

For now, try not to worry about the future, one step at a time is the best advice I can give you. I always just prepare as much as I can for the next stage and don't think beyond that. It works for me and we change so much on this journey, which is understandable.

Sending more hugs. Mickey xx ️
