Fast growing Breast Cancer

had a breast cancer scare 5 years ago. I had all the tests; mammograms, scans & lots of biopsies on my left breast. At the time I was told it was just cysts & discharged. 2 years later I had a negative mammogram.

My next routine mammogram is due next month. However I felt a hard area in my left breast and have just come home from the breast clinic.

I have been advised that I probably have breast cancer as the mammogram & scan have shown a suspicious mass of about 5cm. I'm now waiting for biopsy results (they also took a sample from a lymph node under my armpit )

I'm worried sick.

Has anyone else experienced such a fast growing tumor. How come it didn't show up on my last mammograms? I've never missed one.

  • Morning Pauline,

I know that statistically as we get older we are more likely to get certain ailments, however, sadly there are plenty of young people who end up getting a breast cancer diagnosis and plenty of older people who never do.  I think sometimes we focus too much on 'age' and that isn't the definitive reason.  Like you say, you are in good health with no family history, no other risk factors and are a healthy size and you don't think you have the symptoms of inflammatory BC.  I know you won't definitively know until your appointment next week, but like Lily and I have said, focus on doing things you enjoy this week that make you feel good about yourself and distract you whilst you wait. It's the best advice and believe me I'm taking it myself, especially now I'm a week away from my own surgery. It's good to feel supported and this site, as I've said before is great for that, but don't let it consume you. Remember you're still that fun loving woman and no-one and nothing can take that away from you.

  • Hi Mickey. Sorry to but in. I've just been diagnosed with bc today, ten months after a clear mammogram too so just wanted to make contact. I went to see consultant as have a history of cysts in left breast and that breast was starting to feel a bit troublesome again. It was just cysts again but she found suspicious lumpiness in right breast which has turned out to be cancer. I'd been totally unaware of the lump. Huge shock. I have an MRI booked for the weekend to get more details about what we're dealing with. Anyway we're talking surgery for definite, possibly in 3-4 weeks but won't know full diagnosis for two weeks. I'm seriously struggling to cope.

How are you feeling after your surgery?

    Claire
