Fast growing Breast Cancer

had a breast cancer scare 5 years ago. I had all the tests; mammograms, scans & lots of biopsies on my left breast. At the time I was told it was just cysts & discharged. 2 years later I had a negative mammogram.

My next routine mammogram is due next month. However I felt a hard area in my left breast and have just come home from the breast clinic.

I have been advised that I probably have breast cancer as the mammogram & scan have shown a suspicious mass of about 5cm. I'm now waiting for biopsy results (they also took a sample from a lymph node under my armpit )

I'm worried sick.

Has anyone else experienced such a fast growing tumor. How come it didn't show up on my last mammograms? I've never missed one.

  • Hello Esme,

I'm sorry we've met on here in these circumstances.

It's very scary when we find a lump and immediately we draw on the worst conclusions. I know that until you get the results from breast clinic that your mind won't rest. On average only 1 in 10 breast clinic referrals result in a positive.diagnosis. However, mentally, the waiting and not knowing are the hardest parts. I'm not qualified but know that pain in breasts can be as a result of lots of different things.

You have done the right thing by going to your doctor early and getting a fast track appointment.

I had 2 previous "scares" which turned out to be negative. They both involved pain and lumps which turned out to be benign cysts. This time I had no pain or lump, just an area of thickening.

This site is great when you need some friendly help and support. However try not to read too many threads and remember that most people (the majority) who have been to breast clinic and had negative results don't tell us on here. So it's easy to get an unbalanced picture and scare yourself.

Wishing you well for your appointment on 15th. I hope you'll be able to come back to me with some positive news.

Sending you love and a virtual hug.

    Lily xx

  • Hi Esme,

I just want you to know that I'm here (along with many others) if you need to chat some more, now or after your results.

It's not that long ago that I was in your place.Due to Covid restrictions, I couldn't get through to see my GP for a month. The wasted time drove me nuts. My first appointment at breast clinic was 21/10/2021. Once I was seen at Breast Clinic things moved pretty fast. (At the time each day felt an eternity). It's very much an emotional rollercoaster.

Inflammatory breast cancer is rare.  Many  things can have an effect on our breasts. Hormonal changes in our breast can result in lumpiness and tingling, mastitis, abcesses & cysts can too. If it is cancer you have acted quickly so hopefully it will be caught at an early stage.

It's a very anxious time and although we can't change the outcome, it can help to discusd things or just  blowing of a bit of steam +frustration  with people who understand what you're going through

    Love Lily xx
