2 week urgent referral is running over

I went to my doctors recently about a lump on my hip/thigh. Long story short,  I had an ultrasound scan and due to the size of lump 9cmx4cm (harmless lipoma usually smaller and anything over 10 cm is a concern) was told that they couldn't rule out sarcoma, a form of cancer. Was originally referred on an urgent 2 week referral to the hospital for an mri/investigation. When the 2 weeks was nearly up I recieved a call from my Drs telling me that the consultant at the hospital had looked at my scan and has referred me to a different hospital on another 2 week urgent referral for lump removal. Its been over 2 weeks and when I rang x 2 they just tell me they have my referral and they'll be in touch soon with a date and time, but every phone conversation starts with a pre recorded message telling me there is a longer wait than usual. I know the nhs are struggling with a backlog of patients to see but I'm not sure how much to push for this op or how much difference pushing would make?

Thanks for reading :)

  • Hi Holsbols and welcome to the forum.

As you've mentioned in your post, the NHS are, unfortunately, still under a lot of pressure and some parts of the country have many backlogs to work through. I'm sorry to hear that your urgent referral may have become impacted by this but we'll have our fingers crossed you won't be waiting too much longer to have your lump removed.

There's no harm in chasing your referral and letting the department know you're willing to take any cancellations that pop up but I'm sure some members of our lovely community will offer their thoughts and advice to you soon.

    Kind regards,

  • My husband was referred for a two week emergency referral on the 18th August after having symptoms of bowel issues since 2019/20. We decided we couldn't wait any longer and began the private route. After contacting the urgent referral team directly last week to have a general moan about the wait time and having to go private, my husband had a phone call the next day. Coincidence maybe but I would suggest getting onto them directly.

He has his colonoscopy tomorrow and we are praying for good news although the symptoms don't look great. Either way I am just pleased that he has an NHS appointment booked and happening. Good luck. Keep pushing for your appointment.

  • Thanks for replying

My doctors rang me today after I rang them two days ago to see if they could chase my lump removal appt, telling me I had a face to face (?) at the hospital on the 17th December.  Paperwork sent out yesterday so I'm hoping that will tell me more about what is happening and why? Still in limbo, but it is what it is. My mum.was diagnosed with multi myeloma a year ago so my brain is automatically going to that negative space xx

  • Fingers crossed for you and your husband that whatever it is is treatable and manageable. The wait and the googling and phone calls are a lot to get your head around.

I pushed a little but harder for some kind of answer or appt commitment and was told today by my dr that an appt has been made for me for the 17th Dec. So hopefully when the paperwork arrives I'll know.a bit more

    Good luck x
