Blood in stool girl 26

Hi, I suffer with really bad health anxiety. I have recently been getting bad abdominal pains mainly right side but also pain at the bottom of my back and sides both sides. I had a burning sensation a few weeks ago and went to the docs. They had taken bloods and all was normal, urine sample showed some inflammation. I was given antibiotics which made my tummy worse. I was passing stools 6/7 times a day and the pain in my tummy got worse. I was advised by gp to stop the antibiotics. My bowel movements settled after the antibiotics, however the pain still continues in my tummy. I got an ultrasound of my whole abdomen which came back clear. I recently have been passing blood in my stools since then, also feel like my back area is itchy and irritated. I had a doctors appointment recently who gave me an examination and nothing showed up (hemmoriods, piles etc) she has advised she is going to send me for an urgent referral to get a colonoscopy. I'm so worried I have bowel/colon cancer. I feel I'm annoying my family because it's constantly stuck in my head. I'm a female age 26, otherwise rather healthy. Looking for some reassurance or experience for anyone that has also had these symptoms and what was the outcome?

thanks :)

  • I didn't have the exact same symptoms but did have rectal bleeding and some stomach symptoms (trapped wind, occasional loose stools, some weight loss). The GP didn't find piles in my case either and referred me for a colonoscopy. I was freaking.

The specialist told me that at my age (40), the risk of colon or bowel cancer was very low as it is mostly older people who get it, but that he would do a colonoscopy as IBD was more of a possibility. He was assuming piles/hemorrhoids though and one of his team told me the fact that the GP didn't find anything didn't mean anything, that they can be internal or can retract and wouldn't always be possible to find.

Sure enough, all that was found on the colonoscopy was hemorrhoids.

I can understand why you are really worried; I was too, but at your age, it is very likely the issue is minor.

Hope you get good news and that you get the colonoscopy done soon.

  • Thank you for your reply! I know I'm thinking that also, cos if it is burst surly she wouldn't have felt anything anyway? I hope you don't mind me asking but how often did you have blood in your stool?

mines is bright red blood, the doctor did advise that does intend that it's lower internally rather than higher up.

im hoping I hear soon over the next few weeks. Waiting for the appointment alone while I suffer from health anxiety is driving me insane. I'm struggling to eat and sleep from worry.

    thanks

  • At the start, I had bleeding maybe 5 times a week. It wasn't in the stool itself, just on the toilet paper. After a month or two, it started to ease off, finally to about once a week. It went on for months.

There really do appear to be many things that can cause these symptoms, but it's hard not to focus on the most serious, even if it is far from the most likely.

  • Can I send you a private message please?X
