Urgent cervical cancer referral

Hey

So I started a new pill 3 months ago and since being on it I've had on and off spotting with blood or discharge. For the past 3 weeks I've been super exhausted and had on and off tummy cramping. The doctor requested I came in for a swab and internal. Which I had on Thursday. She didn't examine long before asking me to get dressed and to have a "chat".
She then explained to me she's is doing an urgent referral for cervical cancer. She said that my cervix is abnormal on the right hand side and into the "os" which I'm not sure what that is.

I feel absolutely petrified I'm trying to stay level headed but my brain is just running away with thoughts and emotions. I also suffer with IBS and that's been triggered with stress.
ive been having awful cramps since she did the examination and it's panicking me that it's getting worse or she's just disturbed something down there.
I have my appointment through for a week Tuesday so don't have too long to wait.

Can anyone tell me will I find out on the day of of my appointment whether they believe it's cancer or not?

thank you x

  • Hi,

Firstly I am so sorry you are going through this worrying time. Having been referred back and forth from Gynaecologists, I understand how much it can play on your mind and as you say, it often runs away with worry.

I have been through several referrals through the two week pathway and I've had different experiences at different hospitals, some do tests (colposcopy/biopsies) the same day, others it will be just a consultation and then book you in for anything further (this again should be urgent as you'll be in their system).

Depending on what tests you have will depend on how much the consultant can tell you. I have had colposcopies and biopsies and with the colposcopy they can see what cells they are looking at (from my understanding) and have told me their thoughts (although I must say I got told to expect HPV to be positive and it wasn't when swabs came back). With the biopsies, in my experience they have taken a week or so to come back.

In all my experiences the procedures I have had have been fairly quick and I have always had a lovely nurse who's job has clearly been to keep me distracted and hold my hand! It's such a worrying time, but they have made all the difference.

I hope everything goes well for you at your appointment. You might find it helpful to take a list of questions with you as I've had the opportunity to speak with the drs and consultants afterwards but sometimes have just scurried off and been glad it's over as I had built it up so much in my mind.

    * just thought I would edit to add. My referrals were the result of similar symptoms to yourself, irregular bleeding, cramps, pain. On examination I was told I had an abnormal area on my cervix which was believed to be ectropian which is harmless, but supposedly can look similar to something more sinister, hence the further investigations. Thankfully that is all mine ever was each time, I pushed for further biopsies at my most recent referral even though the Dr felt it was just ectropian as my mind had run away with worry. I'm glad I did and I'm glad the Dr accommodated as it put my mind at ease. I hope you find yourself relieved after your appointment.

  • It is very worrying at the time but I am thankful I have been able to access the doctors, tests and treatments!
