Persistant bloating, excessive burping after eating anything

Hi all,

My wife started having the following symptoms in the last month or 2:
1. Severe bloating after eating anything followed by excessive burping after 30mins that lasts for hours. Sometimes it causes her to puke and that relieves the pressure for a while.
2. Persistent stomach distension (she looks 5 months pregnant) - Her BMI is approx 27
3. Some dull pelvic pain every now and then but no bleeding/mucus, shes not on her period yet due to coming off breastfeeding.

So far we've been to a gastro doctor who refered us to a Gynae doc because he felt an enlarged uterus (he mentioned fibroids in the uterus after doing an ultrasound and small amounts of ascites), the Gynae is a doctor we had 2 years ago because we went in for fertility issues at the time (trying for 2nd child) and was scheduled for a keyhole surgery because he said she has cyst on ovaries/Endometriosis. That op was cancelled due to covid and we sucessfully had our 2nd son via C section.

6 months later, the symptions above started surfacing.

First I suspect she has SIBO (Small Intestines Bacterial Overgrowth) which can cause excessive gas, she cant control her burps as they just come out uncontrollably and sometimes farts too. She use to take Omeprezole on and off for about 1-2 years, she was on it last for approx 2-3 months (20mg a day from GP), I've asked her to stop taking it and her burping/bloating feeling seems to have reduced but acid reflux has started (i read it could be acid rebound) but could also be her food intake has reduced alot too (1 slice of toast, grapes/1 yogurt for lunch, soup for dinner with bread).

Omeprazole reduces stomach acid and I read this could be a reason for the bloating/not enough stomach acid to digest meaning it ferments the food? The last time she puked we saw a piece of mushroom ate 2-3 days ago, could the food be sitting in the stomach all this time? I read the stomach empties itself by approx 4-6 hours and it all goes into the small intestines. Her poop is a bit loose but goes regularly (every day or 2), partial intestine block?

Regardless of this, her stomach today is still large, she had MRI and CT scan today, the wait for the results is unknown as the next appointment is 3 weeks time. My mum passed away from ovarian cancer 5 years ago and this is the first thing I thought of due to persistant bloated stomach (physically large) but she didnt have the excessive burping.

Does anyone have similar symptoms or stories? I don't know if the symptoms are related or 2 seperate issues, I read endometriosis can mimic ovarian cancer symptoms but not found anyone/article with the same issues.

Thank you for your time!

  • Hello Fuzzyone,

I just wanted to welcome you to our forum. I hope you won't have to wait too long for your wife's MRI and CT scan results. I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting for these important results.

Unfortunately no one here will be able to tell you what these symptoms might indicate as you will need to wait for the results of the scans to find out but I hope that you will hear from others here who have had similar issues and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you. I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have experienced similar symptoms and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed that everything turns out fine for your wife.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Fuzzyone,

I read your post and I can understand why you are so worried. It's really good your wife is having lots of tests done and that the hospital consultants are looking after her.

I am not a doctor, but there's lots of things that could be happening here. I have had ovarian cysts, fibroid issues and gastro problems too - none of which turned out to be cancerous. You can get a lot of swelling after abdominal surgery and that can last a long time (12 -18 months). Also pregnancy can cause  hiatus hernias to form - another issue that causes reflux/ pain, but also diet  can cause lots and lots of digestive issues (I have recently discovered I have gluten and lactose intolerance) but these are best checked out by gastro before excluding foods from your diet. Ovarian cysts themselves cause a lot of pain and swelling too - so I can get why your wife is feeling so bad.

I know you will be super worried right now - and it shows how much you love your wife. I hope everything turns out well for you and she gets the best treatment to get well again.

  • Thanks for the replies.

I had to take her into a&e due to acid reflux/vomiting and she couldnt stomach anything including water.

After some IV drips (dehydrated), anti sickness, omeprazole and paracetamol, shes feeling better over night but we're still stuck with the initial problems.

Doctors (nhs) are waiting for her scan results from the private hospital and we're waiting for a plan for formulate.

Looking after 2 young children whilst this is happening is so difficult, i've even lost approx 4kg in the last 3 weeks (needed to lose some weight anyway lol).

Just hope its something surgery can fix fairly quickly and shes back on her feet.

  • Just a quick update, she had an endoscopy done and they found a large ulcer near the opening of the small intestines. Prior to that she had a NG in for 2 days to drain the excess fluid from her stomach so they can have a clear view of the stomach. Shes just finished her 7 days antibotics and I think it was to treat H pylori, shes back on omeprazole 40mg twice a day and shes no longer vomitting or excessively burping though she is only having liquids and eatling little due to her stomach distension (ascites).

Doctors said given the size it may have been there for a while and said it doesn't look sinister but they took biopsy in the area just to be sure. That was on a Friday 29th Oct, said the results should be out the following friday/monday. Monday came I called up to check, said the results are back and they scheduled for my wife to attend a face to face meeting.

I'm hoping the results are good, there is a gynae MDT meeting today and a GSTT MDT Meeting tomorrow (I think this getting advice regarding her suspious mass near her ovaries). So far there is no diagnosis, the ascites is what worries me and she is on a 2WW pathway.

All this waiting is driving me crazy but I need to keep calm and not panic my wife, I need to stop reading things online but a lot of the literature points to certain things with a rare chance of benign cases.

I find that speaking to my brother and ranting to him frequently helps me to relax somewhat.

  • Hi Fuzzyone,
