Lump in eye socket - who do I go to?

Hi all,

I've come here as I don't know who to go to about a lump in my eye socket that I've had for nearly 2 years now.

I've done some googling and there are so many possibilities as to what it could be. Looks like it could be a number of things, some harmless, some scary and some harmless-with-the-potential-to-become-scary-if-not-treated.

I've got a lot of unexplained symptoms under investigation. Chronic daily vomiting since I was 12. Asthma that got worse around the same time the lump appeared. It's painless, mobile and not attached to the skin. I'd say it looks to be where the lacrimal gland is.

I've asked about it a few times but was not encouraged. The GP 2 years ago have me antibiotics and steroids and told me to do warm compresses, none of which helped. The optician back then couldn't even find it and then said it was a stye (no inflammation, redness, discharge or pain and nowhere near my eyelashes so I don't think so!).

I went back to the optician this week and was told it was probably xanthalasma and to go to the derm and check my cholesterol. Cholesterol came back normal (I'm an underweight 27 year old with no family history of cholesterol issues). And looking at pictures of xanthalasma, I really doubt that's what it is. I think he was looking at skin texture on and around my eyelids (he said I had some below as well), as I have blocked pores and very pale/transparent skin. He didn't touch me or do any scans that would allow him to see something inside the socket I don't think (used a torch thingy to look?).

I requested my records and there was no mention of my concern and it was the whole reason I attended. Not did it mention xanthalasma or that he'd looked at it. I emailed back in response to my records asking if something was missing  and have had no reply since Monday.

My question is: who do I go to now? Who can I get to look at it properly or do a scan or whatever else is needed? I have a benenden plan and might be willing to go private (although don't have unlimited funds). Is it an opthalmologist? I'm a bit lost. I've not pushed this much as I've got so much going on with other symptoms and medications and everyone is focusing on gastric causes for the vomiting.

  • Welcome to the forum Someone321 although I'm sorry for the reason you're joining us.

Your GP may be the best person to see next as they would be able to refer you to the relevant department to get this looked at in more detail. Do be sure to explain everything that has happened and your reasons for being concerned but if you're unhappy with the response you receive and have more than one GP at your surgery then you could try getting a second opinion.

Hopefully some of our members will offer their thoughts and advice to you soon but if you'd like to have a chat with one of our nurses, you're welcome to give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Fingers crossed you can get this resolved soon.

    Kind regards,
