Does a bile duct obstruction always mean cancer?

I am terrified about my dad, I've already lost my mum and brother and I'm in my early 30s.

he has developed jaundice, with all the typical symptoms such as dark urine pale stools and typical flu like symptoms and is getting full very quickly.

he had dangerously high levels of ALP, bilirubin and Ggt? I am desperately clutching at straws as I don't know how ill cope without him but was hoping someone else had been through the same thing and has a positive story, he has been fast tracked for a scan

  • Hello kellyrosie,

Poor you it must be a terrifying time at the moment. You're only in your early thirties and you have already lost your mum and brother - this must be so frightening for you.

I am not sure myself what these high levels mean and what can cause bile duct obstruction but if you'd like to talk to one of our nurses about it, feel free to call them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. They won't be able to diagnose your dad as you will have to wait for the scan results for this, but it might help to talk things through with them.

Hopefully you will hear from others here who have been through this before and who have a positive story to share.

I am keeping everything crossed for your dad that he has his scan very soon and that it turns out to be nothing too concerning.

    Best wishes,
