scared about worsening symptoms before mole referral

I have been waiting for my "2 week urgent referral" for 3 weeks now, and I still have just over two weeks until my appointment date. Since I first saw a doctor the original mole (on my knee) has become larger, and I have a new change in a mole on my nipple which has become much larger and darker and seems to be changing even faster. I'm so overwhelmed with nerves about it, I know there's no way I can control this situation but I'm just at such a loss mentally about what to do. I really just want answers, but I know they're a long way off. I guess I'm not really here for advice, because I don't have a question, I just want to talk to people who might understand the nerves and tension I'm feeling. I'm finding it really hard mentally.

    Hi Rachel,

A very warm we;come to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about the wait you are having to be seen. Sadly, many waiting times have been extended due to Covid. If it's of any consolation to you, we all feel  afraid and over emotional whilst we are waiting to be seen and again, when we are waiting for results of any tests. In the meantime, try to keep busy to help the time to pass.

There is no way of telling whether or not there is anything untoward until you have had some tests. I have been through this process with 3 moles on different parts of my body and have been fortunate on all 3 occasions. Here's hoping that you will be too.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Rachel,

I know the wait is increasing your worry, especially if you can see the mole changing & another one changing since your referral.

Can I just say that it's very unusual for someone to present with two possible melanomas at the same time so hopefully at least one, if not both, will come back clear. Do you have many moles? It may be that one or both moles are dysplastic (pre-cancerous) and these tend to occur most on patients that have many moles (100 +).

The extra wait of a few weeks for your appointment won't have much, if any, affect on the mole(s) getting worse but it will have an affect on your mental health so can I suggest a couple of things? To try and bring your appointment forward, ring the dermatology department and tell them you are happy to take a last minute cancellation appointment if one becomes available (if you are in a position to do so). Then, whilst waiting, try to keep yourself busy & distracted with other things, work, hobbies, spending time with family or friends - even distracting yourself for an hour here & there will help minimise the stress. Also, try not to keep checking your moles as it will worry you if you focus on them all the time. Check them once a day & then leave them. Moles can become larger and/or darker and still be non malignant so try not to focus on the worse case scenario. 75% of people seen by dermatology are given clear results, 20% are dysplastic and only 5% are melanoma so the odds are in your favour that they could be fine.

Good luck & please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
