Asymmetric tonsil, sore throat - ENT referred

Hello.

Information first; for 10 weeks, my left tonsil has been swollen. Could be more than 10 weeks though, I don't often look inside my mouth. My voice is weaker, my throat is a little sore and is irritated easily (partner flapped the bedsheets when making the bed, for the next 24 hours I was coughing and the soreness increased). When irritated, even by cold weather, it leads to tickly coughs (not COVID). My neck? I look like Jabba the Hut. I sometimes, though not often, get a little bit of earache in my left ear.

Bloods show no infection, I was given a steroid spray incase it was allergies... didn't work.

Finally referred to ENT specialist, who I will see tomorrow.

I have obviously asked Dr Google what it might be, and have also gone through the forum here. Just want to add how soothing it was to read people who have been in a similar situation to me!

But yeah, I'm concerned. The doctor who referred me seemed to babble about how it could be cancer, and then I got the ENT referral with a leaflet that says "cancer pathway".

I am 33, non-smoker (but lived with smokers in my life), I drink in moderation.

Anyone else been through something similar? What can I potentially expect? (scan, tonsillectomy ect)

  • Hello IcelceJabba,

Welcome to our forum. I am so pleased to hear that you have found it soothing to read the forum posts here. It certainly helps to read the experiences of others who are going through or have been through the same thing. Keep well away though from that unreliable Dr Google - whatever you ask this "doctor" you can be sure you won't get a definite answer, it will only leave you with more questions and more googling and exacerbate your anxiety.

How was your ENT appointment yesterday? I hope that by now you feel a little reassured and that they have given you an indication as to what it may be and what to expect.

Try not to automatically assume it is cancer even though the leaflet referred to a "cancer pathway" - this only means that you will be seen quickly which is a good thing and that hopefully you can get any tests you need sorted promptly.

I am keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing too concerning and I hope that others who have been through something similar will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
