Waiting for an ovarian ultrasound

Hi guys,

I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience to me. Long story short I've had symptoms of ovarian pain, constipation (now treated with several laxatives), awfully painful periods, painful sex and weird lower abdominal bloating (it feels hard and sticks out only in the lower half belly button and below not like normal bloating) for about maybe 7-8 weeks now. Initially the doctors thought it was just constipation but now I've had an onslaught of laxatives to fix the pooping issue and the pain and bloating isn't gone. They did a blood test and swab test for STIs and general function (kidneys, checked I wasn't coeliac etc.) blood and swabs came back fine. They were about to refer me to a gyno until they realised they needed to do their own ulstraound before this was possible. This was two weeks ago that they said they'd refer me for an US. He did say the wait could be up to 4-6 weeks but that normally it's around two. I haven't heard anything at all yet and was expecting maybe a letter by now. Anyway I'm in a lot of pain as my period is supposed to start again today and I really think something like a cyst or growth is in there but obviously I need this US to tell. Should I call them and ask what's happening? Will me calling change anything? My bloating is really weird and I feel so sick and nauseous! Not having a good time writing my university dissertation at the same time!!

update - I got a letter today my appointment for transvaginal ultrasound is on the 18th November (a month away). I'm nervous and also not enjoying the idea of having to deal with four more weeks of this without knowing what it is. Does anyone know if you get the results on the day or is it a follow up phonecall?

  • Hi Flissflossbobross,

    I feel your pain :(

I have had pain in lower back, pelvic area and bloating since March 21 and still waiting. Had total MOT at GP and still waiting for results.

I also get a painful "popping" sensation in the ovarian area and it wakes me up in the night, which scares me. As you say, how long should we wait for results?

  • Hi TBird59

I know it sucks doesn't it!! If it helps my blood test and swab results came back within a week but I had to be the one to organise a doctors phonecall to be told the results.
that's a long time waiting! Doctors really should've got you going with investigation by now :(

  • Hey!

Sorry to hear that you are all experiencing this worry! I had my first ultrasound (abdominal and transvag) back in march and got a call 3 days later from my gp to say it's a dermoid cyst with  womb polyps. My symptoms were very similar, barely able to eat a few bites before I'm full and pain in ovaries, legs and back plus bloated. I was told that there was nothing to worry about and i would get an appointment with a gynaecologist soon...my appointment is on Saturday...7 months later...I've since had another scan and the radiologist actually told me then that there had been no change, which was reassuring. I think it will depend on who gives you the scan as to how quick results are. Hope you all keep well with minimal pain. Take care

  • Hi Arlene,

That's crazy that you had to wait that long!! That's what I'm worried about too - getting a scan then waiting months to be seen by a specialist. Everyone moves so slow!! I hope you get sorted though it's been a long time coming for you definitely!
