Urgent referral to breast clinic with a minimum 6 week wait.

I went to my gp on the 8th of this month with a large lump in my left breast. Gp said he could also feel 'swelling' and referred me urgently to the breast clinic. I have heard no word from the hospital so phoned today and was told they received my referral on the 8th but i have yet to be allocated an appointment. I said the waiting time should be 2 weeks and i'm now over that and she said they're just not making that deadline - minimum is a 6 week wait and she could see i was 'quite far down the list'.. is there absolutely anything i can do? This seems a bit barbaric and an awful long time to wait on an URGENT referral..

  • I'm sorry you're having to wait a while to be seen by the breast clinic despite being on an urgent referral.

Sadly many parts of the NHS have been badly impacted by the pandemic and they're trying to catch up with back logs as quickly as they can but some parts of the country are still struggling more than others.

The only thing I can suggest is that you let them know you're willing to take any cancellations that pop up. Hopefully some of our members who have been in this position will share their thoughts and advice but if you'd like to have a chat with one of our cancer nurses about this then do give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Fingers crossed you can get seen more quickly.

    Kind regards,
