Ovarian cyst and fluid in abdomen

I've been reading so many brave and inspiring posts and hoping that you all can help me be a better husband by finding some reassuring answers for my wife who is 35.

She recently went for an ultrasound which revealed fluid in her left ovary, she was referred for a transvaginal scan which revealed a mass of 88mm X 66mm in the right adnexa, no vascularity was detected with doplar imaging and the pelvis was free from fluid. An MRI was recommended.

Following MRI the consultant seemed to have trouble conveying the actual issue, she said the cyst was very big but the biggest concern was the sheer amount of fluid in her abdomen. The right ovary was intact.

My wifes ca125 levels are elevated at 55.

We were told a sample of the fluid needs to be taken. It could either be TB or possibly cancer.

As you can imagine this broke our hearts, we're certain it's not TB but the consultant didn't suggest any other cause besides cancer for the vast amount of fluid reaching the lymph nodes in her abdomen.

I read that ovarian cancer can cause a cough and my wife has a recent cough (not covid, not always chesty). She has all the other symptoms such as bloating and an upset stomach.

Her period is regular and lasts 5 days.

We've been referred to an oncologist who will probably take some samples after a consultation -the lead time is probably weeks.

Is there anyone who can offer any reassurance based on the above? Anything at all to comfort her whilst we endure a painful wait or anything that suggest contrary or advanced cancer?

I just want her to be OK but I realise the best way I can help her now is to find her answers that the consultant was unable to give us.

Thank you all in advance for reading and any answers.

  • Hi Lovemywife,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of the situation with your wife, and I can understand that this must be incredibly difficult and I know the waiting and uncertainty is never easy.

I appreciate you are looking for answers, but unfortunately it will only be the medical team involved in her care who can provide these, after they've done all the tests that they need to do. It is quite cliched but sometimes the best thing to do is to take it one step at a time - and, while you wait, one day at a time - and hopefully the appointments and results will come quickly.

If you feel you'd like to talk things through with someone, our nurses are available on 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5), although please note they are not able to diagnose or give a medical opinion.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
