Worried

So I've noticed a swelling under my arm since about July. I woke up five weeks ago and had a really uncomfortable feeling under my arm where the swelling is. The swelling started to feel really tender along with breast pain for about ten days before my period last month. The pain and tenderness subsided after my period but the swelling never went away and my breast would still get painful occasionally. It feels so uncomfortable under my armpit all the time, almost like something is stuck there.
I went to GP who referred me to breast clinic which I attended last week. They did mammogram and ultrasound under my arm and said they could see no areas of concern and all my nodes look normal. However I'm still not convinced.

I'm going to see a specialist this week for a second opinion as I really need peace of mind, it's all I can think about.

  • I hope the second specialist gives you piece of mind and that everything is okay for you.

Keep us posted, sending you hugs x

  • Hi Kate

im having similar symptoms to you, I went to the doctor with intermittent and moving breast pain which also was felt in my armpit occasionally in September and though they couldn't really explain the pain they did find a lump and referred me to the breast clinic. I attended there at the end of September and was told the lump was a cyst which was drained there and then, the pain was put down to chest wall pain. I was obviously relieved but have nagging doubts as I was only given an ultrasound on the area they found a lump and my armpit still hurts periodically and, though I can't feel any lump, do feel the area is a bit more 'wobbly' is the best way I can explain it.

What kind of specialist are you going to see, is it a private doctor? Some people think this kind of feeling could be hormones, I'd feel better about that if a doctor had said it!

  • Hi EmmaM1982

Thanks for replying. Do you have swelling as well? It's so worrying. It's a breast specialist who is an NHS consultant  but does this privately as well. I just figured I'd get more answers this way than going back to GP. I just want a 2nd opinion as I know sometimes things can be missed on mammogram and ultrasound. I keep telling myself it could be hormonal because of my age, I'm 41 but I just don't know anymore. I'm so scared.

  • Hi Kate

im 39 so quite similar age. I don't think I have a swelling or lump in my armpit necessarily but I sometimes just feel a bit 'flobby' under that armpit, and it can feel sore/bruised and like a prickly pain, my other armpit can also feel the same but to a lesser extent. It comes and goes tho, does yours come and go? When you say swelling do you mean a lump or just kind of bloated in that area? I'm not sure if stress might be leading me to tensing all the time and maybe caused pain that way, it's a viscious cycle.

All this is so scary isn't it, I hope your specialist  appointment does give you some reassurance and explanation of what's going on, I think that's one of the hardest things to be told it's all fine but no real explanation for how you're  feeling or the symptoms you're presenting with.

  • Mine seems to be there constantly, I wouldn't say it's a pain as such but I just always know it's there. The odd time it can feel a bit prickly. The swelling is def visible especially when I have my arm by my side. it's just at my armpit crease. When I first went to the GP at the start she said she wasn't worried about the swelling but there was definitely a thickening and that's why she was referring me. I just feel that I haven't really got any further forward even though I've had a scan and mammogram, they couldn't really tell me what was causing the discomfort.

  • Thank you so much Heatherjane10... thinking of you on your journey as well

  • Hopefully the specialist will be able to give more answers, write your questions down before you go and make notes of their answers to refer back to when you get home, I felt overwhelmed with relief after my appointment and couldn't get out of there quick enough but wish I'd asked for more of an explanation, I think I somehow expected my symptoms to go after I was given the all clear but because they haven't I'm constantly wondering if somethings been missed or that things have developed since then (the armpit pain has got worse in recent days).

At least we've both had doctors and breast clinics with actual screening tests checking us out and given us all good indications.

  • I was the same had tears of relief when they told me they couldn't see anything and then it was only when I got home I started to realise I still had the same problem and did they miss something. Are you going to go back to your GP again?

  • Yeah I've got another appointment but it's a week on Monday, takes so long to get in! Like you though I might just book a private appointment, even if I could just talk to a breast specialist to understand it all a bit more as I just keep googling otherwise and self-diagnosing (with all things leading to worst case scenario as all websites seem to caveat).

I don't really understand why they didn't do a mammogram with me and why they only ultrasounded the one section as I went with breast pain which was only partly put down to chest wall pain. It bothers me that I didn't have full checks, if I had I wouldn't be so worried.

when are you due at the specialist? Do u have people u can talk to for support? Im here for u and plenty of people in these chats who have a range of experiences of these things, didn't realise so many people out there going through similar!

  • I'm going this Tues night so really hoping to get some answers! I have a good support network around me, although not many know I'm going to see the specialist.
Aw thank you I really appreciate that, sometimes it's easier to chat to someone you don't know as well, esp when they are going through similar circumstances like yourself.

Maybe you were too young for mammogram? I think they generally only do them once you reach 40.
