Ovarian cyst - confused

Hi

I have read discussions on this forum from afar but never posted before. I find myself with no one to really speak to about this and i'm hoping for a bit direction from people who have perhaps been in similar circumstances.

I am a 33 year old woman, who is generally fit and healthy. I don't smoke, don't drink and I try to keep a good diet etc.

I have always suffered from heavy periods since starting my periods at 13. I suppose as an adult they have got more painful which I know happens and for me it has always seemed normal. I noticed in the last few years my periods would on some occasions be really sore but again, no other symptoms that would make me think something was wrong.

I decided to go to the doctor last year because one month I got a bit of light spotting between periods. This was new to me and it was only when I would wipe. It didn't last long. My periods in general are regular.

The doctor done blood tests which were normal and refered me to gynaecology and I had a colposcopy, a smear test and a transabdominal ultrasound. The tests were all fine, the ultrasound noted my ovaries were "perfectly normal" and the only thing found was a very small uterine fibroid, which I was told can make your periods painful and heavy. No follow ups needed.

A year on, in August 21, I had this light spotting between my period again. I went back to the doctor and he done blood tests again and refered me for another ultrasound. He would not do another smear test for me as he said the last one was fine and I'm not due another for 5 years.

My bloods were normal and I had the ultrasound yesterday. This was a pelvic ultrasound but she also did a transvaginal ultrasound.

she could see the fibroid which had not changed in appearance or size. She also identified the lining of my uterus was thick which she put down to me being due a period any day now, and said as it was thick it was hard to tell if there might be a polyp. She then said very casually that there was a small cyst on one of my ovaries which sometimes people get as part of their normal menstrual cycle.

Two hours later, I get a call from the doctor saying he wants me to do a CA125 blood test ASAP before I start my next period, as once I'm on my period it won't be accurate. I said is this to check me for ovarian cancer and he said that is what the blood test checks. I told him what the sonographer had said about the cyst and he started saying he didn't know what kind of cyst it was. To be honest the whole conversation was a blur and I feel I couldn't ask or take in anything he was saying. I am due to get this blood test done on Monday morning.

I am concerned that I am due a period literally any day, might come before or on Monday. He knows this and says if I don't have my period he wants to do the test. Wouldn't the blood test still be elevated because I am literally ready to start menstruating? Also I have fibriod so it could be elevated cause of that?

What kind of things should I be asking my doctor to clarify? I am now worried if I can't have this blood test and need one wait a couple of weeks due to my period, that this cysT I have is not being attended to - is there another way they can check what it is ?

Im sitting here so worried I have ovarian cancer. I am sick of talking to my doctor about periods, I feel they never take me seriously - they did this last year and it turned out I had the fibroid. They did it this year, I had to really push to get checked over again. I feel so bad for women, a doctor was told me "your period is supposed to be painful" and "you have to just suck it up" before handing me a perscription for the pill.

And the waiting. I completely understand how busy our health service is, I just feel the waiting does no one any good for their mental health.

Any thoughts or advice appreciated.

Thank you, Brit xx

  • Hi I thought I would post, I have always had heavy periods so last year I was sent for a external and internal scan. They found fibroids and a cyst on ovary. Referred me to hospital and also wanted to rescan again after 3 months. With covid the hospital appointment was delayed but I still managed to have a scan 3 months later. Fibroids were a bit small womb lining was thick I also apparently have a bulky womb. They couldn't see any cyst that had gone. A few months later the hospital didn't scan or do anything and said everything was ok on last scan results so sent me on my way. I was really worried for all those months and glad I got checked out. I hope all goes ok for you. It's natural to worry x
